NY-21: Paul Tonko On His Victory Last Night

by: robert.harding

Wed Sep 10, 2008 at 11:28:22 AM EDT

Paul Tonko won last night with 39 percent of the vote and a convincing win over Tracey Brooks. It was a great victory for Tonko considering he was one of five candidates vying for the nomination.

Tonko had this to say about his win last night:

"I am honored to have the opportunity to represent the Democratic Party on Election Day in November," said Tonko. "Over the last few months, I've met with thousands of people across the Capital Region, and listened to their concerns for the future of this country. I want to thank them for their support and confidence that my vision is the right one for this district."

Tonko continued: "I also want to thank the hundreds of people who volunteered for the campaign, they put in countless hours in support of my candidacy. Without their help, we would not be moving to the next round.

"There is more work to be done as we head toward Election Day in November, to fight for the issues and change that will get our great country back on track. We need a national energy plan that lessens our addiction to foreign oil, invests in renewable energy sources, focuses on conservation and efficiency, and sparks an innovation economy that could lead to thousands of new Green Collar jobs right in our area.

"We need a universal health care plan that will provide insurance for everyone and lower costs for working families and American corporations. And we need a responsible plan to end the War in Iraq.

"I also want to thank each of my opponents for the spirit they brought to the primary campaign. We shared common ground on many issues, and while approaches to solving complex problems may have differed, our ultimate objectives were in close synch.

"However, with the primary now over, we all must come together to ensure that the issues which we all deeply care about are carried forward to the national debate."

With his win last night, Tonko is more than likely the next representative of NY-21. He will make a great representative and has a record of service to this state that proves that.

Congratulations Mr. Paul Tonko (4.00 / 3)
Paul is a good and fair man. He will be an excelent representative for the 21st district.

While I strongly supported Darius Shahinfar and believe that support to have been properly placed, I have no qualms to follow in Darius' footsteps last night and declare my endorsement of Paul Tonko for Congress in NY-21.

It was a good campaign and we knew going into it that any of the 4 Democrats in the campaign would make an excellent Representative while none of the 3 Republicans would even come close to representing the beliefs, needs, and positions of the vast majority of the people of the 21st.

Peace,

Andrew

I personally congratulated... (4.00 / 3)
Darius last night. He ran a clean campaign, and I will be proud to help him out to facilitate his future ambitions.

You did a great job Andrew, and the entire Tonko camp appreciates it.

I look forward to seeing you on the trail - Mayoral and Common Council Elections are just around the corner :-)

An amazing victory (4.00 / 2)
I give it up to Paul Tonko.  He ran a clean campaign as well, and a strong one at that.  While I still attribute a lot of his victory to name recognition as he was able to pull of such a decisive victory after a very late start and considerably less cash raised, one has to admit that name recognition is an asset that is earned sometimes.

I'm glad to have the Democratic candidate making energy policy his number one issue, and that a candidate with a good deal of experience in the area will make the transition from candidate to Congressman in January of next year.

Paul started as little more than a Town and County official at a very young age, and went to serve many years in the Assembly and a brief stint as a statewide executive.  Once his career in Congress is over, you can guarantee that the name Tonko will have the most lasting of all name recognition factors:  he'll go down in history as one of the most distinguished and long-serving public servants in the history of the Albany area, which goes back to the earliest days of the colonization of this continent.  If a former ardent Steck supporter can say that, I think all Democrats in the 21st can say:  Way to go Paul Tonko!

I wonder what a non Albany rep means (4.00 / 2)
I live in Amsterdam and am very happy that Tonko won. I would have settled for every other candidate except Brooks. Its hard for Albany county residents to understand, but Mcnulty seemed to focus all of his attention to it. Most of the district is made up of cities and towns like my home Amsterdam that have been decimated by the changing economy. I pray that Pauls win will bring attention to the state of communities like my own. I also thank god that the Albany Machine's power seems to be dying. A Brooks win would have meant that Jennings and the gang would have their own hand picked controlled candidate. Tonko will represent everyone, not just his political supporters.

Important point (0.00 / 0)
There is an economic "line of demarcation" that runs to the west of the Hudson Valley in NY.  Tonko's district straddles it.  Brooks certainly did seem "of" places like Colonie.  Where I grew up, in Guilderland, is more suburbs with homes that hold their value, etc.... but, as you head West up the hills, and to Amsterdam, you begin to see the Other NY. The one that is lagging behind even most of Appalachia economically and loosing it's population of young people.  Are these people important to represent?  You bet.  Let's see what the new "green economy" as per energy can do-- and maybe what NYRI can't do, too.

Congrats to Tonko, he has my full support in the general, but (0.00 / 0)
he does not need money in this heavily Democratic district, except maybe from Dem fat cats (if any) who are already maxed out supporting congressional candidates in NY-13, NY-25, NY-26 and NY-29.

The House races that need funding are these red to blue pickup opportunities: McMahon in 13, Maffei in 25, Kryzan in 26 and Massa in 29.

While I appreciate your sentiments: (4.00 / 1)
I disagree wholeheartedly. Jim Burhmaster has a war chest of over $300,000 (mostly his own money). He also has a lot more at his disposal.

Further, Jim and Paul are from the same neck of the woods, and we can rest assured that (while Jim is a decent guy) - the Schenectady County GOP and the Tedisco crew will not be so decent to Paul Tonko in the General Election.

While I don't think it's going to be a massive campaign to undertake - it needs to be taken seriously, and that includes donating to the campaign.
