SD-46: Weiss Campaign: "To Be Continued..."

by: Soundpolitic

Sun Sep 14, 2008 at 14:46:00 PM EDT

Despite the overwhelming numbers from 12-year incumbent State Senator Neil Breslin's first primary victory, runner-up challenger David Weiss has sent the following statement to supporters after taking a few days of rest after Tuesday's primary signaling that the Weiss campaign is not over yet:

Hi.

As most of you know, I came in second on Tuesday's primary, 14% of the vote.

Everyone's been asking how I feel.

I feel great because I know that I did the best possible job I could.  I was out every single day all summer, knocking on about 200 doors a day (getting, by the way, an incredibly encouraging response along the way), working 20 hours a day and organizing some great volunteers.

And everyone also wants to know what I've learned.

Although I went into this thing knowing I was going against a huge machine, but I didn't realize the extent to which the local media would black out this story.  The Spotlight wrote a nice article, but Times Union & WAMC studiously avoided mentioning the race.

As to what I'm going to do next?

Check below the fold for the answer to that big question...

In the rest of his post-primary message to supporters, Weiss makes it clear that the campaign continues.  He vows to work to get legislation passed despite not being on his way to becoming a State Senator this year, as well a vows to take on low primary turnout and the lock the local media and Albany County Democratic machine has on voter information.

Finally, he makes an appeal at the end to continue the campaign to make him State Senator by asking supporters to write him in this November, forgoeing an endorsement of his opponent.

I had some very important legislation (Community-Based Energy Development / www.c-bed.org) to introduce, and even though I'm not in office, I'm going to pursue it.  I'm going to push it and get a Green Jobs Initiative, which I worked on 15 years ago, going.

I am even more fired up than usual about getting people involved in the process - the non-voting apathy has got to be attacked and people have to understand basic civics of knowing how important a primary is. Why wait for the monied interests and the machine to hand you their candidate?  SEPTEMBER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN NOVEMBER.

By they way, those of you who contributed funds will be glad to know I ran an extremely frugal campaign.  When I have the information in a few days, I'll let you know how little each of my votes "cost" as opposed to my opponents' - you will be amazed!

So that's the short story.  There's a book's worth more - the corruption in Albany is mind-boggling and I want people to know about it so we can reclaim OUR government.

Finally, I know way too much about Breslin at this point to vote for him in good conscience - so I invite you to join me & write in David Weiss in November.  I'll do some research about how we'll do it on the new machines - stay tuned.

Thanks for all you've done.

This has been an awesome experience.

And you all know, this is not about me, it's about all of us - especially our kids!

David

I, for one, know too much about the Senator Breslin as well, and am all too familiar with the dirty-tricks and big-spending tactics of his Conservative Party general election opponent, Charlie Voelker, who placed last in the primary, to simply pull a lever for my State Senator in November either.  As such, I will use all my power as a citizen of New York and write-in David Weiss in November, and hope that I can vote for Weiss again in 2010...

Until then, stayed tuned for news related to David Weiss as his campaign for change continues.  In the near future, expect to see some sort of organization behind C-BED, which is legislation that the State must pass if we are to get out of this energy crisis, and a report on just how much Senator Breslin spent to "win" the primary and how much Charlie Voelker put himself in debt only to lose.  In the long-term, expect the allusions to "a book's worth more" and "non-voting apathy has got to be attacked" to materialize as well.

Write In DAVID WEISS for State Senate
