What Democracy Looks Like

by: NYBri

(With the appointment of Congresswoman Gillibrand to the Senate pending, I wanted to re-post this diary I wrote originally wrote in early 2007, just after her first win. In my mind, what was true then is true now. I know the Congresswoman, and I know she will work harder than anyone to represent all New Yorkers... - promoted by NYBri)

Last Monday, citizens of Northern Dutchess and Southern Columbia Counties participated in a bit of Democracy.

You see, newly elected Congresswoman, Kirsten Gillibrand, hosted a Rhinebeck Town Hall forum at 11:30 AM on the topic of Alternative Energy and how we can do our part in slowing global warming.

She and her staff brought together a diverse, knowledgable panel of experts that offered education, information and opportunity. They were:

  - Dr. Larry Walker from Cornell University
  - Ron Kamen from Earthkind Energy
  - Tom Congdan, Special Assistant for Energy to Governor Spitzer
  - Patrice Courtney Strong, Coordinator of Mid-Hudson Energy Smart Communities

Why was this important? Find out after the flip.

NYBri :: What Democracy Looks Like
Actually, there should be nothing remarkable about this meeting between experts and citizens. It SHOULD happen all the time, but unfortunately, in the recent past, meetings like this have been all too infrequent in this district.

The fusion of a responsive, accessible Congresswoman to frame the issue, an educator from Cornell to explain the problem, a technology expert to describe real-world solutions, a community activist to offer help and money-saving advise to citizens, an officer from the Governor's office to act as a conduit for people's voices to be heard in Albany and a great turnout of local residents made for a perfect example of how our Democracy should work.

The meeting was remarkable because of it's unremarkable simplicity. Education. Discussion. Action.

On a personal note, I had the opportunity to appear with candidate Kirsten Gillibrand this past summer many times. I found her to be tireless and incredibly attentive to detail and to the people with which she spoke. It's one of the reasons I feel she won. After seeing her in her new role, I can only say that it appears she was born to do this job. I'm not necessarily talking about her positions on issues. I am talking about how she is approaching her position as a Congresswoman...thoroughly and effectively.

After watching how prepared she was for this meeting and how she connected with the panel and the people, I have some advice for those who think she will be defeated in the next election. Don't bet the ranch.

Kirsten Gillibrand will, I feel, become a very popular Representative because she is focused on doing her job well for everyone, not playing the politics of separation and reprisal...and that is what our Democracy should look like.

Arcuri, too (4.00 / 1)
It appears to be a well-coordinated effort to refocus on what's important-- democracy, education, connecting citizens and legislators and experts to confront our most pressing problems.  Arcuri's very similar event last Saturday is described in this newspaper article.

Bri, while you were out on the campaign trail with Kirsten, I was out with Mike.  We have some fine folks representing us in Washington now-- and they are going to be re-elected, no question.

Glad to hear... (0.00 / 0)
...that we are returning to what's important and that Arcuri is practicing the fine art of Democracy as well.

I hope to meet him soon.

We've got some work ahead of us.

I'm very proud of Kirsten (4.00 / 1)
as all New York Democrats should be.

I'm not worried about her re-election, she'll be fine.  In the meantime, lets all enjoy watching her be the real deal that she promises to be.

Great photo (4.00 / 2)
I am excited with what Gillibrand has been doing and feel the months of time I volunteered for her campaign were well worth it.

What a long, strange trip it's been.

do the math (4.00 / 2)
If you aren't scared of your constituents like Sweeney was it makes good sense to go meet with them.  Those 50-100 people she met with are going to say good things to everyone they know.  You keep having those meetings and you are doing your job and you are also creating volunteers and dedicated voters.

Its the odd type of politics that is actually win-win.

nice work, team Gillibrand.

Received an email from a staffer.... (0.00 / 0)
...who told me they are planning many more of these forums on issues and services.

This is just the start.

We've got some work ahead of us.

I think she is really on the right track (4.00 / 1)
the more she reaches out to the community, the more they will see her for what she is and the more they will like what they see.

What's not to like (unless you are Sweeney and the Sweeneybots).

What a long, strange trip it's been.

Very Good.

All New Yorkers, Brian? (0.00 / 0)
How about the daughters and sons of "illegals" whom Kirsten (yeah, I'm on a first-name basis with her, too) wants to "crack down" on and deport, because their parents deserve no amnesty -- whom KG considers "criminals"?

Bad choice by Paterson, who could not have handled this more clumsily from start to finish.

P.S. Listening and hearing are two different things. P.R. stops and true responsiveness are likewise two different things.

I've talked with Kirsten; I don't think I've been heard. But I've been invited to join her finance committee!

I saw this comment, Hudson... (0.00 / 0)
...we normally agree and on this we have had different experiences.

We'll see...and if this turns south, then there will be time to do something about it, but for now, I'm pleased with the choice.

Also, actually Paterson was handling this pretty well for all the right reasons, and things happened that turned a pretty good process into a mess...but not Paterson's doing.

We've got some work ahead of us.
