Cuomo Makes One Hell Of A Hire

by: phillip anderson

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 11:40:19 AM EST

I can't believe I missed this yesterday. The Attorney General made a fantastic hire yesterday, one that demonstrates a serious commitment transparency and reform. Danny Hakim of the New York Times has more:

Cuomo Hires NYPIRG's Horner

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said this morning he was hiring Blair Horner, the legislative director of the New York Public Interest Research Group, to run what he calls "project sunlight," an uber-database he proposed during his campaign that will track activity of lobbyists, donors, elected officials and special interests. Horner has been the dean of the good government groups in Albany and a go-to quote for Empire Zone and other members of the Fourth Estate, and his hiring will likely be seen as a pr win for the attorney general.

"In terms of public integrity we take a big step forward today," Mr. Cuomo said during a press conference with Mr. Horner. "You currently have a vast web of different disclosure databases," he said, adding, "you have a whole collage of databases but it doesn't really serve to inform the public."

Horner will also be a special advisor to Mr. Cuomo on policy matters.

This is really fabulous news for the reform movement in New York. Blair Horner is the real deal.

the combination of (4.00 / 4)
cuomo's "project sunlight" project and horner running it should be awesome. what it says to me is that this project is no BS. you don't hire horner to run a sham.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

This is great news (4.00 / 3)
I was thinking of doing a post on Project Sunlight anyway. But this is notice that we should be paying attention to more of the good stuff Cuomo is doing.

What are they smoking? Find out at alien & sedition.

For all the acclaim (rightly) given to Spitzer lately, (4.00 / 1)
Cuomo is also off to one hell of a start.  And I never would have expected it, you know,  with him basically spending his childhood inside NY's dysfunctional political scene.

Actually, maybe he's rebelling (0.00 / 0)

Where the sock puppets sock it to 'em (4.00 / 1)
Another indicator that this is the real deal when it comes to reform is the rapid-response sock-puppet team's defensive action over at CapCon.  Our friend LuLu is commenter #70 on this news-- but, most of the comments (many repetitive) are from a group of very snarky, personal-attacking right-wing regulars who, as several commenters pointed out, do not seem to be employed, or are blogging from work.  Now, I'm the first to admit that I have lots of time to blog because I am unemployed-- a hit team of right-wing "dirty tricks" specialists in Ontario/Monroe Counties arranged that... and, no, I have not yet found it in my heart to forgive them, 'cuz it was mean and unfair. But, the important info is that it also convinced me that there really are paid disinformation and dirty tricks jobs in this state.  And, I suspect that some are doing sock-puppet duty at CapCon.  I wrote a nice email to Jay about trying to clean up the site, and he was responsive. Recommend same to TG, LuLu, whomever.  Go ahead and say I put you up to it if you want.  "Whorner"?  Blair sure does not deserve that kind of abuse!

wow. (0.00 / 0)
kind of glad i've missed that. the utterly predictable wingnut reaction to any given stimulus over there is pretty annoying.

Blair Horner is awesome (4.00 / 1)
I am very excited. He spoke at a DMI Marketplace of Ideas event on reducing the cost of Rx Drugs. The guy does amazing work and is a real champion for good policy that helps the people.

Blair Horner is a great pick (4.00 / 1)
The Brennan Center agrees.  NYPIRG is going to have trouble filling his shoes.

Yeah Horner (0.00 / 0)
he'll be missed after all, he single-handedly:

Made certain that tuition at CUNY and SUNY was reduced to affordable levels and worked for effective programs that admit and retain poor students;

Forced the utilities to reduce their electricity prices;

Stopped big Pharma from jacking up prices;

Spearheaded the building of the mass transit projects serving New Yorkers throughout the state, and

Steamrolled NYC into doing something to reduce particulate emissions in NYC.

Yeah everyone will really miss Blair's advocacy in Albany...he was so very effective...and so irreplaceable with that track record.
