SD-55: Alesi is push-polling

by: Exile on Ericsson St.

Wed Oct 01, 2008 at 16:17:21 PM EDT

The folks at RochesterTurning have been doing a fantastic job of keeping up with all the polling going on in the Rochester area. Here's the latest: Jim Alesi's campaign is running a push-poll, or a negative message-test poll, against David Nachbar.

Would you favor a candidate who's playing in politics because they're bored with their job?

Would you favor a candidate who has a history of tax evasion and bankruptcy?

Would you say a candidate who supports Gov. Patterson's plan to recognize gay marriages performed in other states reflects your values?

I believe this probably is a push poll, not simply a negative message-testing poll, because the first two questions are obviously so negative.

This means one thing for sure: Alesi is nervous.  This race could be a big sleeper.  It's not getting the attention some other races are, but Nachbar's a strong candidate and Alesi may not be quite as accomplished a glad-hander as he's reputed to be.

Um (0.00 / 0)
How is it push polling if they are not trying to push you towards or away from any candidate?

It is shoddy polling, but that is a different story.

having been push polled (0.00 / 0)
This is how the one I got hit with worked.  It was clear from the lead-in which candidate was the one that had done all the bad things they were asking about.  With message-testing (I did a message-testing poll once too), they said "would it change your opinion about Joe Shmo if you knew that he voted against health care", stuff like -- milder and with the candidate's name in the question.

to clarify (0.00 / 0)
When I got the push poll, I knew nothing about politics and it worked on me.  I went around thinking that Candidate X (it was some guy running for SOS in California) had really embezzled money or whatever it was they were suggesting. Dumb as it sounds, the fact they didn't spell out which candidate had embezzled (or whatever) but just made it clear from context made it more believable to me.

Not exactly a push poll (0.00 / 0)
because they didn't name the candidate in the question.

So its either a terribly done attempt at a push poll or a terribly done negative message test.

Either way its terrible.

Republicans. (sigh)

if those are the actual questions (0.00 / 0)
then it just looks like shoddy polling as has already been mentioned. if they are trying to push poll, they are doing a pretty shitty job of it.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

I think this is pretty well done. I wish it weren't but I think it does plant the seed in the uninformed voter's mind.

I'm sure which candidate they meant was clear from context.  That's how they often do them.

It does sound like a negative message-testing poll. If they were push-polling, they would actually talk issues.

Apparently they are going to hit Nachbar on the fact that he is a bored, rich businessman who decided to run for office. The tax evasion/bankruptcy thing is interesting because those are pretty serious charges to level against an opponent.

And the marriage equality thing is, well, stupid. Just because Alesi hates gays doesn't mean everyone else does.

It doesn't sound like push polling, although that is the perception that is given here. In reality, it seems like they are driving to test-drive some negatives about Nachbar that they are prepared to hit on.

You know what that means? We should be prepared to defend them and counter them.
