SD-41: Ken Dow Endorsed By Sen. Chuck Schumer

Ken Dow is running in a tough race against Sen. Stephen Saland in the 41st Senate District. But he received a boost yesterday when he was endorsed by New York's senior senator, Sen. Chuck Schumer.

Senator Charles Schumer has announced his endorsement of Ken Dow, Democratic candidate for the NY State Senate in the 41st District (Dutchess and Columbia Counties).

Senator Schumer said, "Ken Dow understands the strains facing working families and businesses, and he is prepared to lead New York forward in these difficult and changing times.  Ken is committed to the serious steps we need to keep New York moving forward, such as reforming our burdensome tax structure and modernizing our infrastructure and energy systems. Ken Dow is the kind of thoughtful, progressive, and hard-working leader we need in the State Senate, and I am happy to give him my support."

Ken Dow said, "It is an honor to receive the support of Senator Schumer. No one works harder or more effectively for the people of New York, and I look forward to following his example in my service to the people of our district and state."

While Sen. Schumer is busy trying to increase our majority in the U.S. Senate, he is also doing his part to help New York Democrats take back the New York State Senate. This endorsement is just one example of his efforts, but he has been more than willing to reach out and endorse state senate candidates who are in close or competitive races.

Of Course Schumer Endorsed Him (0.00 / 0)
It's not as if Schumer endorsed him on anything other than the fact he is a democrat. With all due respect to Mr. Dow, did you see his announcement in Hudson when he decided to run for office? Sort of an empty suit and not too exciting or articulate!

Where should we start with Saland's endorsements. Not only did the Poughkeepsie Journal endorse Saland, but an unbiased and sharped tongue Liz Benjamin wrote on her blog:

Liz says [GOP Sen. Steve Saland (41st SD) landed the endorsement of his hometown paper, The Poughkeepsie Journal.]

Poughkeepsie Journal says "Dow [D- running against Saland] makes the interesting argument that the state Senate could be controlled by the Democratic Party following November's election results, believing in that event, he would be in a stronger position than Saland to get things done for the district. But that might not necessarily be the case even if the Democrats do gain control of the Senate, which in and of itself isn't a lock. Republicans hold a 31-29 seat advantage in the Senate. Over the years, Saland has distinguished himself as a senator - and before that as assemblyman in that Democratic-controlled house. Voters have every good reason to return him to office." (end of quote)

Well earned endorsement. Sen. Saland is an example of 'it ain't broken.' Even if the Senate flipped Sen. Saland would still be in a better position to represent his constituents. Everyone is watching -- bipartisanship is in the air. Sen. Saland is not a problem maker.

Not too shabby.

How about this?

State Sen. Steve Saland, R-Poughkeepsie, has the best record of bill passage this year. The veteran lawmaker introduced 129 bills, and 24, or 18.6 percent, passed both the Senate and the Assembly, according to data compiled by the New York Public Interest Research Group. Saland, who is a committee chairman and part of the Senate majority, is in the top one-third among all state legislators.

BTW - Great piece of progressive legislation from Saland - awarding court costs and attorney's fees to a petitioner when it is determined a school board or municipality holds a vote or a substantial deliberation behind closed doors rather than in a public setting.

Not bad! And it was bipartisan!

On another note - all the clamoring about the middle class and housing issues in NYC...where is the outrage here over Rangel?!?!

I'm sure Dow is a nice enough guy, but don't merely stick your head in the sand and vote for him because he is a democrat. I know that is the easy route. Vote for the better candidate. Sorry guys and gals - this is a no brainer!

Better candidate? you have no idea (0.00 / 0)
Clearly 123alent -- who commented on this page -- has never met Ken Dow, nor spoken to anyone who has met him. Ken is one of the last remaining honest people on earth. When he ran the Board of Elections, the REPUBLICAN commissioner called him "the straightest shooter I have ever met." (This quote was printed in the Register-Star newspaper when Ken left the Board.) He is incredibly smart (Harvard), and his driving passion is to stand up for people who are powerless in our system. If we had a whole State Senate of people like Ken, New York State would be soaring instead of crashing and burning. Having him up there representing us would be a breath of fresh air in the stale old halls of inaction.
As for the endorsement from the Poughkeepsie Journal, they have endorsed the incumbent every year since the paper began. If you want to know how thoughtfully and carefully they did their research, check out the full endorsement in which they misspelled Ken's last name (as Low instead of Dow), throughout the entire piece.
As for sending back the same old Senators again and again, year after year, all I can say is, how bad does it have to get before we decide to send in people with new ideas?
I do agree with one thing that 123alent said, this choice is certainly a no-brainer. It is critical that we elect Ken Dow.
