South Carolina Priest Wants Parishoners Who Voted For Obama To Repent

by: robert.harding

Mon Nov 17, 2008 at 19:56:12 PM EST

I went to South Carolina in March so when I saw this video, I wasn't surprised. It is Republican country and while there are some Democrats there, it is the South. They will remind you of that.

One South Carolina priest apparently feels that invasion of privacy is now a practice of the Catholic Church. He is ordering is parishioners who voted for Barack Obama to repent before receiving Communion.

I will tell you that I have a girlfriend who is Catholic that voted for Barack Obama. Her family - all Polish Catholics - is very religious and for the most part, are anti-choice. Her mom volunteers every year at the Pro-Life booth at the county fair.

But her mom - my future mother-in-law - voted for Barack Obama. Her mom is a conservative Republican who proudly voted for Barack Obama. She was excited that she voted for him just like millions of Americans were.

When I heard about this, I asked this question: When will church and religion be what church and religion used to be about? When will it be a guide that helps us through life and helps us through life's toughest challenges and decisions? I have seen the Catholic Church evolve into a political establishment who apparently thinks they can tell their followers how to think. My advice to the Catholic Church would be to leave the political science to us. We can take care of it. But not everyone can be our guides when we need a guide and our adviser or counselor when we need one. That is where religion should play its role in our lives. Injecting politics into religion (or vice versa) is dangerous and will do nobody any favors.

this is depressing (4.00 / 1)
I was raised Catholic and now I will not set foot in a Catholic Church, because of this sort of thing.  I don't see how any organization that is this overtly partisan deserves to retain its nonprofit tax status.

Funny thing... (0.00 / 0)
I had two priests that lived in my election district. I knew this because I knew both of them and I was a town Democratic committeemember. Both were Democrats. But I knew both were anti-abortion. Still, they were Democrats. They didn't push politics on their followers. That is the key thing.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
I believe that a lot of priests are liberal.  But the hierarchy of the church seems to lean right, and the only priests who feel comfortable pushing (which none of them should) are the right-leaning ones.

let's see (4.00 / 2)
the man with a stable family that has only been married once

or

the twice married serial adulterer?

hmmmm.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Adultery? (0.00 / 0)
That's so 1950.

You can sleep around, just don't get them pregnant. Because an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy might lead to abortion. THEN the Church will hate you.

not to mention (0.00 / 0)
the fact that i'm pretty certain that barack obama has never killed anyone. yeah, it was his job and all and he he did it in uniform, but mccain made living for years dropping HE ordinance on actual human beings.

culture of life anyone?

TODAY is day one. It always is.

not sure if this one's fair, phillip (0.00 / 0)
But the question of why the Catholic Church and other conservative religious organizations push banning abortion and denying Americans the right to marry at the expense of peace, abolishing the death penalty and fighting poverty is indeed fair.

[ Parent ]
It's not really about "culture of life" or the ten commandments (0.00 / 0)
It's about the subjugation and control of women.  Know any other organization that still categorically denies women entry into not just the top positions (at the Vatican), but actually ALL the managerial-level and respected jobs?  If you are a woman and want to work for the Catholic Church, you can be a nurse or a teacher.  Or an anti-abortion campaigner (as long as you are supervised by a priest).

How'd this work out for Cardinal Woolsey and Thomas More? (0.00 / 0)
Ask Anne Bolyen.

That's (0.00 / 0)
"Anne Boleyn"-- numero uno heroine of my childhood... consumed endless biographies.  A tragic story, but, so ahead of her time, and so determined.
