A few days ago we wrote about a terrible hate crime that took place in Suffolk County and the role Suffolk County Exec Steve Levy's policies and posturing might have played in it. Today, Levy is apologizing for his attitudes and vowing to change:
Speaking during a 12-minute address on the News 12 cable television station, Levy declared the death of Marcelo Lucero, 37, will not be in vain. The second-term county executive pledged to be more sensitive about his public comments on immigration-related issues in the future.
"Words do matter, and I will do all I can to help ensure that my words are as sensitive as possible toward meeting our goal to heal and to unite," he said.
Let's hope Levy means it. Immigrant-bashing is a bankrupt strategy -- morally, intellectually, and politically. |
