And Then There Were None - It's Over

by: phillip anderson

Thu Dec 04, 2008 at 16:09:51 PM EST

The three quixotic Senate holdouts (a good friend referred to them as the "Diva Three") have finally cut their deal and pledged their support to malcolm Smith who will indeed be the next Majority Leader of the New York State Senate. Liz has the goods:

The leadership battle that has frozen the Senate since Election Day is over, and the three renegade senators known as the Gang of Three have all pledged to support Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith for majority leader in exchange for an agreement that will result in what Sen. Carl Kruger called "significant and historic reform" of how the chamber operates.

...

I called Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr., and he confirmed: "It's over. It's a done deal. We agreed."

But what about gay marriage - Diaz's signature issue and the one thing he said he absolutely wouldn't abide coming to the floor?

The senator refused to tell me anything about what kind of deal Smith struck on that (recall that Diaz said he wanted a written pledge that whoever he supported for leader would not bring a bill legalizing same-sex marriage). The only thing he would say was: "I'm comfortable that everything's going to be OK."

Diaz said all three of the gang members, including Senator-elect Pedro Espada Jr., were present at a meeting with Smith that lasted most of the afternoon.

Sorry, Dean. The calvary was never coming. You were never going to pick these folks off. You were never going to become Pedro Espada's Deputy ML.

I'd like to congratulate Senator Smith. He worked his tail off to get this majority and he's been working hard to prepare his caucus for the transition from the minority. And now it is time to deliver.

I both support the Senator and expect big things from him. That said, it's now put up or shut up time. For decades, the NY State Senate has been where reform went to die. There are no more excuses now. The people of this state have waited far too long for the type of leadership on these issues. We deserve better and we expect it, Senator.

Best of luck.

This is a HORRIBLE deal (0.00 / 0)
Basically, you don't negotiate with terrorists, and Smith just gave Espada and Kruger what they wanted.

The conservatives are running this conference.  The party labels are a distinction with out a difference.

What a bad deal (0.00 / 0)
Liz is reporting that Espada is going to be made majority leader.  Giving in to a Freshman state senator is a joke.  This deal just sold out many of the Democratic ideals that we elected these guys for.  I hope in 2010 WFP and the Dems primary and beat Espada, Diaz and Kruger.

Agreed in full (0.00 / 0)
I posted on this in the updated thread but we need to take these three out in 2010 or else we risk losing any sense of party support in Albany.

The other problem (0.00 / 0)
Is that by making Kruger chair of Finance, his ability to fundraise just exploded.  He will go from one million to two million COH in record time, making it difficult to actually beat him in a primary.

Exactly (0.00 / 0)
Never negotiate with terrorists. This is awful Upstate just took a 20 inch pole up our ass again. How can ANYONE justify taking Stach off of finance?

Fuck it, I'd rather have the minority than this horror. I though the majority would help bring good government and some respect for our part of the state.\

Now I know better

I'm voting Republican in 2010 for the Senate.

To Marriage Equality being part of the deal:

"We are still awaiting the final details of the announced State Senate leadership deal," Pride Agendy director Alan Van Capelle said. "We would expect that any rumors that marriage equality was somehow a part of this deal are just that - rumors. Civil rights should never be a bargaining chip in any political leadership battle, and we would be outraged if the issue of marriage equality was even part of the discussions."

The Gang....The Future (0.00 / 0)
Appreciate your frustration Amherst Guy, but voting Republican in 2010 is clearly not the answer.   The NYS Senate is absolutely where "reform has gone to die" as someone else posted.  Hopefully that will change to a significant degree now.

When the switch to Dem is actualized in January, perhaps then we will see some GOP retirements, which will greatly enhance our position in 2010.  If we are able to hold both the Senate and Assembly, and the Governorship, in 2010, the GOP may be Gerrymandered out of existance and true reform can take root.

Get ready to work hard for the next two years!!

You're right (0.00 / 0)
I need to do more than just vote Republican, I need to give them large sums of cash and work my ass of to take back the State Senate for Upstate.

You can't possibly understand what this means to my part of the state. Schumer? NYC. Smith? NYC. Paterson? NYC. DiNapoli? NYCish. Cuomo? NYC. Silver? NYC. Whoever replaces Hillary? NYC. We lost the Majority Leader's post in the Assembly 2 years ag when Tokasz retired.

The SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING we - all of upstate - were going to be left with was the Finance Chair in the State Senate.

But its more than that. It's about corruption. The Republicans in the Senate are corrupt. The Democrats in the Assembly are equally corrupt. Now, we're putting corrupt hustlers in charge of the of the Senate.

Fuck that.

why the explosive shift? (0.00 / 0)
Yeah, there are days, lots of 'em, when I'd like to start an Upstate party or just break the state in two.  (The question used to be who gets Westchester, but these days it's more like who gets Albany...)

But why is this particular moment setting off explosions over Amherst?

We knew as soon as the election results settled that we were in for a nasty ride.  The Republicans would just as happily have granted the Gang of Four its requests if they could have pulled it off, and where would we be then?

No place better, I'd suggest.

Yes, this sucks.  Of course it sucks.  But Upstate Dems are going to have better opportunities when the ice finally breaks on redistricting for the Senate.  The rules changes that Smith's proposed seem likely to increase the sanity of the Senate over the next few years.

No, the Senate won't be trying to buy Upstate the same way it has for the last few years, and yes, the current roster of statewide folks blows chunks.  And yes, the level of corruption is staggering.  It has been all along.  You won't find me arguing against you on that!

But to me that's mostly opportunity, a chance to put an entire region in play in ways that might finally break the party/region connections that have stifled us for a damn long time.

Nobody's in charge up here any more.

It's being told, (4.00 / 1)
"I don't give a fuck about you".

No one's ever bought upstate anything. Albany, yes. My part of the state? Ha. Desperately begging the state for $20 million for our waterfront (and failing) as the state was ready to build the Jets a $1.2 Billion stadium on Manhattan jaded me a little.

This is why it was so important to take the Senate upstate. This is why Dollinger and Iannello needed to be our state senators up here. Because then the 7 of them could demand at least a fucking equal place at the table.

These idiots downstate are in 90-10 Democratic districts and would lose their seats for caucusing with the Republicans. We should have called their bluff, because their options were to come on board anyways, or lose their seats in 2 years.

Our senators up here actually can make a threat without fear of losing their seats. I hope they do.

And I'm clearly not actually going to vote Republican in 2010. But I am going to do something much more damaging - find someone to primary Senator Smith.

Common Amherst, whats with all this downstate upstate crap! (0.00 / 0)
I supported upstate challenges from my downstate easy chair the entire cycle.  There is just one state and Paterson/Schumer/Smith know and understand that and there will be much more done to help upstate now and in the future because we either hang together or hang separately, thank you Mr. Franklin.

[ Parent ]
You better be right. (0.00 / 0)
but Schumer is the only person who seems to care.

Mr. Franklin?

Benjamin Franklin (0.00 / 0)
We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.

At the signing of the Declaration of Independence

I'm too upset to comment about recent developments. But, I'm happy to explain the reference to the quotable Mr. Franklin.

Apropos (0.00 / 0)
As per my comment above, I believe that "hanging separately" or, at least, going down to electoral defeat, is a real possibility if we can't/won't hang together.

I'm embarrased (0.00 / 0)
that I didn't immediately get that.

Politics64... (4.00 / 1)
I supported Brian Foley (gave him a few bucks) and I did the same for plenty of other candidates. I saw Sen. Malcolm Smith at a press conference in Rochester and he preached the "One New York" theme. I bought into it (and I still believe in it) but if you are going to talk the talk, you better walk the walk.

The problem the Senate Democrats have to realize is that if this all stands, the Republicans will use that as a political tool in 2010. They will say that the New York City Democrats took power and kept power concentrated downstate. Right or wrong, it's how they operate. If we fail to realize that, we will fail to make gains in upstate and elsewhere.

Remember (0.00 / 0)
Thompson is the only safe Dem upstate. While defeating Breslin would be difficult it is not impossible, and I don't think I need to explain the inherent vulnerability of Stach, Aubertine and Valesky.

We're making it really really easy for them to run on the upstate-downstate thing. They only need 2, or 1 and the Governorship. Which they'll also run on the Upstate-Downstate if they can convince one of their three major upstate county executives (Erie, Monroe, Onondaga) to run.
