Where Do You Stand, Kirsten Gillibrand? UPDATED

by: phillip anderson

Wed Mar 14, 2007 at 11:02:04 AM EDT

I ask because I'm confused. See, I remember that "Bring The Troops Home" rally on the waterfront in Poughkeepsie. You should too. You were there. You spoke passionately about ending the war. You were amazing. Here's a picture I took of you addressing the crowd on that blustery afternoon:

Now I read over at MyDD that you may be one of the Blue Dogs who can't bring themselves to vote for a bill that sets a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. Granted, Matt added in an update that rumor has it that you want to see the bill first. Fine. But, I want to know just where you stand on this issue.

And, yeah, I know. I get it. I know you are in a marginal district. I know it can't be as easy to stand up to this idiot president from the 20th as it would be in other places. I also know that the president is going to do whatever he damn well pleases no matter what Congress does. But, damn it, Kirsten, you and many others were sent to DC for a reason and ending this god forsaken war was certainly a large part of it. I and most of the country have had enough. Take. A. Stand.

Where do you stand, Kirsten Gillibrand?

UPDATE: I just got a call from Gillibrand's Chief of Staff and he informs me that Kirsten will indeed be voting FOR the supplemental and that it was "never in question" that she would do otherwise. This is very, very good to hear. Cheers to you Rep Gillibrand.

Michael Arcuri . I'm not. but, to be fair, i never saw you speak passionately against the war with my own eyes.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Gillibrand on Iraq (0.00 / 0)
Her "carefully nuanced" position is posted on her campaign website.  http://www.gillibran...
It's hard to pin her down from that, as it advocates a strategy to "win" by, among other things, fixing unspecified political criteria before any "exit" date.

Frankly, it's brilliantly non-committal.

to me the fight isn't over whether they vote for the (4.00 / 1)
supplemental or not - I expect most Dems will since the ball still gets moved forward - it's whether the supplemental includes real teeth to force Bush to bring the troops home.  Right now it doesn't.

Gillibrand, Arcuri, more (4.00 / 1)
It's going to take work to get Congress to vote the right way, even with Dems in control.  We're going to have to hold their feet to the fire.

I'll diary the Working Families Party position, but the bottom line is we want the House to limit the use of funds to protecting our troops' safety and bringing them home now.

We're asking everyone to email their Representative for the fight over the supplemental budget.

After that we're talking about running full page ads in hometown papers of waffling Dems - if anyone's interested in helping raise money or the creative you can email me.

this post was very much an effort at feet to fire placement.

you should definitely keep us in the loop on WFP's efforts. this BS has gone on long enough.

Good work (0.00 / 0)
Next time Gillebrand's CoS should try to be a bit more proactive and not let information that massively damages her netroots credibility sit online for over a day.

I don't think it was only about a timetable (0.00 / 0)
I know from other sources that the Blue Dogs were the reason that forbidding the president to go to war with Iran without congressional consent was struck from the legislation.

I didn't know that they were also against a timetable.

Did they forget why they were elected?

typical political BS.. might as well be John Sweeney in a skirt... (0.00 / 0)
... first she joins the blue dogs who use her membership and support to pressure Pelosi to remove all the important parts of the supplementary funding bills war restrictions.. by letting Bush decide if he wants to waive any of the criteria.. thus gutting the 1 year between troop rotations.. gutting the training and equipment requirements..  gutting the requirement that Iraq meet progress criteria..  then once the bill is totally useless for putting pressure on to stop this war..  she says she will vote for it.. essentially giving Bush another blank check to fund his war... and somehow this is seen as a good thing by the local yahoos on this board.. if she was really against the war she would vote against this worthless supplemental funding bill...

as far as I see it.. just John Sweeney in a skirt..
