Bloomberg Smacks Rudy In New Q-Poll

by: phillip anderson

Wed Mar 14, 2007 at 13:59:45 PM EDT

Rudy may be by now considered a for real frontrunner  for the GOP presidential nomination (I know, I don't get it either), but voters in New York City prefer the current Mayor to the old by a large margin according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University. New Yorkers feel that Bloomberg would be a better President than Rudy by a spread of 46 - 31. That's gotta hurt.

Bumpy Bus Ride And Snowstorm Don't Slow Mayor, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; More Say Bloomberg Would Be Better Pres Than Rudy

New York City voters disapprove of the way Mayor Michael Bloomberg handled the school bus scheduling change and the Valentine's Day snowstorm, but still give him a near-record high 73 - 19 percent overall approval rating, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

...

In other findings, New York City voters:

  * Disapprove 62 - 12 of the Mayor's handling of the school bus schedule change;
  * Disapprove 49 - 38 percent of Bloomberg's handling of the Valentine's Day snowstorm;
  * Feel 58 - 35 percent that the Mayor cares about their needs and problems;
  * Say 46 - 16 percent that Bloomberg is a better mayor than Rudolph Giuliani, with 34 percent who say both are the same;
  * Say 46 - 31 percent that Bloomberg would make a better President than Giuliani.

"America's Mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, doesn't score all that well where he really was the mayor. New Yorkers think Bloomberg is a better mayor than Giuliani and - how will this go over on the campaign trail? - that Bloomberg would be a better president," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"New Yorkers like you, Mayor Mike, even on your bad days. You live like a zillionaire, but they think you care about their needs and problems.

Here's an interesting question; how come I don't know any New Yorkers that love Bloomberg?

how come I don't know any New Yorkers that love Bloomberg?

All your friends are anarchists?

Seriously, I do know several good liberal folks who actually kinda like Bloomberg - I'm not one of them, but I don't particularly hate the guy, either. He's done some pretty crappy things, like trying to railroad the city into a West Side development boondoggle, or comparing protestors to terrorists. But he's not a loathesome individual like Giuliani.

What are they smoking? Find out at alien & sedition.

My opinion of Bloomie: (0.00 / 0)

i'm so effin' sick of that line of thinking. seriously. that makes me crazy.

But on a municipal level, if a RINO carries out basically every policy I would do if I was mayor (i.e. raising taxes on the wealthy to pay for increasing the city's annual education contribution by 3.5 bil a year, giving teachers a 43% raise since  taking office, actually doing or at least talking something about poverty, being rabidly pro-choice, very pro-environment (including having the balls to create a great waste tranfer plan that actually puts transfer stations in wealthy white neighborhoods instead of minority communities), and leading the charge against the proliferation of illegal guns), how can I really complain?  It's not as if the dem candidates for mayor over the past 2 decades have exactly been inspiring.  Remember- if this were the 1860's, we'd all be republicans.  lol.  And don't worry- I absolutely hate every other republican in the entire country.  In my opinion, Bloomberg is that one exception.

i guess you don't remember (4.00 / 1)
the late summer of '04. i do. i remember having the bill of rights effectively suspended for a few weeks. i remember thousands of folks locked up in atrocious conditions for having the gall to call bullshit when our "best liberal democrat to run the city" mayor invited the worst of the worst of the Republic party to our town along with the their anti-gay, anti-poor, anti-immigrant anti-truth dog and pony show. i remember him holding them despite repeated orders from judges to release them. i remember his PD processing folks 5 or so an hour out of 100 centre street. i remember them covered in filth and sores. i remember that the cops were suddenly able to process them much faster beginning about 7:30 thursday night right as president cuckoobananas was giving his acceptance speech. i remember bloomie practically blowing him as he and his coterie of utter fuckwits stomped across our city in yet another attempt to pimp our tragedy for political gain.

i remember all of that.

is he a tom coburn republican? no. but the notion that he's "the best liberal democrat to run the city" is complete and utter hogwash. when push come to shove, he's still a republican. period.

/rant.

Fair enough (4.00 / 1)
I'm not gonna defend that.  I guess we just disagree as to whether that can be subordinated to the larger picture.  I was at those protests, and I didn't recieve or know anyone who got mishandled by the cops, but I have heard the horror stories and they are inexcusable.

Somebody in my family was one of those arrested by ground zero, and it wasn't too pritty. 20 hours in Gitmo on the Hudson, and we lost our Yankee tickets. Seriously what gives?

Lipris, cry me a river... (2.00 / 2)
Among other things, the goal of the demonstrations was to cause some havoc and disorder. There were plenty of ignorant people harassing good cops just doing their jobs. When you try to bog down the system...well you get bogged down in the system. Normally, one has a "right" to be processed withing 24 hours of arrest, but it is not uncommon for an arraignment to occur 30 plus hours after an arrest. If people are arrested in mass, well, you get stuck in jail. Was it a pretty situation? No. One where people were wronged? Yes. But, by you making your statement about all republicans makes it clear to me that you will never be part of the answer to the problems. Merely, you will be part of the problem. Yes, you can see that there are issues with NYS and the Bruno republicans. However, the "Steamroller" is quickly learning that you catch more bees with honey. The answer is not to have one group in control (I would be scared if everyone fell into place for Spitzer even if I agreed with everything...see Craig Johnson), but for people to voice their different opinions.

Sincerely, I know you want to help implement what is best for your adopted NYS and I think you have raised many good issues whether I always agree or not. Here, I don't agree and it pains me to see the ignorance of your statement that he is "still a republican." Don't be blinded by  your own anger and catch the bees with honey every once in a while.

Oldster that I am, I don't really know what a "wanker" is, although I have seen it used as a slur on more aggressive blogs that I have stopped going to....  So, I looked it up, so I would know what it meant, in case somebody called me that.

wank·er /?wæ?k?r/
-noun Chiefly British and Australian Slang: Vulgar.
1. a contemptible person; jerk.
2. a male masturbator.

I guess I am in little danger of being called the second meaning.... although, of course, that kind of aggressive locker-room boy-talk does tend to make all the women leave, and then the guys can freely call each other whatever they like-- or complain about not getting any sex with women, "whatevs".

I really dislike namecalling, especially vulgar namecalling.  Makes me wonder about disassociating myself from the TAP effort, even though I think the stated purpose of the blog is really important.

BTW-- Where is the place on the poll in this post to vote in favor of the first woman Mayor of Ithaca, who is a leader in the mayors for green cities movement and has put Ithaca in the top ten in that category nationwide?  Or, is anybody who doesn't live in NYC just a male masturbator?

While Few Would Love Him . . . (0.00 / 0)
. . . even fewer really despise Bloomberg.  I can think of plenty of folks I would prefer to have as mayor of NYC, but unlike as with Giuliani, I've never been able to work up much of a passionate hatred of Bloomberg, either.  I began loathing Rudy even before his appointment as U.S. Atty for the SDNY, and have never let up.  During his first run in 2001, Bloomberg's worst offense, in my mind, was his embrace of Giuliani's endorsement (so even then, it was still about Rudy).

For much of 1999-2001, Giuliani posted some of the lowest job and personal approval ratings in recent memory, and here in the city, his 9/11 halo has been fading ever since he suggested that elections and the city charter ought to be tossed aside to permit him to remain in office.  Revelations over the years ave only tarnished him further.

Bloomberg, then, benefits significantly by contrast.  Rudy's biggest backers always argued that effectively governing in NYC required strong-arm tactics and at least a somewhat dictatorial style.  Say what you will about Bloomberg, but on this score, he's disproved Giuliani's point entirely.  I'm not trying to suggest that he's been a model of openness and accomodation, but I think most New Yorkers would say that they prefer the velvet glove to a truncheon any day of the week.
