The Working Family Parties, a true powerhouse of New York State progressivism, has come out strongly in favor of a bridge loan for the Big Three.

They're also hosting what should be a very interesting get together in Rochester next week, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Cay Johnston discussing why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

WFP's base is unions. Anything other than some sort of bailout plan will hurt the UAW.

Personally, I'm in favor of using TARP money. We know that most of the $250 billion (or is it $350 billion?) already spent has gone down the rabbit hole; spending an additional $15 billion in a way that could actually make a difference to hundreds of thousands of workers (at least until the economy turns around) has to be a better way to spend that money.

Unfortunately, since using TARP money would be good for the UAW, and since the Republicans (who are still in power, it turns out) want to destroy the UAW, I wouldn't bet on it.

NOTICE: The bailout deal in Congress is dead. The Senate failed to reach agreement, because Republicans demanded elements that would effectively destroy the union, and Democrats (some, anyway -- most likely Chris Dodd) refused to go there. The only option for a bailout now is the TARP.
