Condemning SNL For Paterson Skit

I like Saturday Night Live. I always have. They were a strong presence during the elections and have always shown a knack for knowing their politics.

However, a line was crossed Saturday Night. I was watching the show when Fred Armisen played Governor Paterson during "Weekend Update". They gave the perception that the governor was a druggie and a blind man who was rather clumsy because of his disability.

Obviously, in regard to Governor Paterson, we know that's not the case. For someone who is blind, he gets around remarkably well. To the outside observer, one might think he's not blind at all. I have seen him in person twice now and he has walked to the podium swiftly and with great precision.

So the skit that featured Fred Armisen as Paterson went beyond comedy. It became rather serious and, well, offensive.

I can appreciate a good joke. I have a great sense of humor - a trait that was passed down from my dad. Laughter is truly the best medicine. But when Armisen continued to walk around the set and run into things it got annoying. It wasn't in good taste and it became a not-so laughing matter.

I hope SNL can find the time to apologize for this. It didn't represent Paterson accurately and it was rather tasteless.

here's betting (0.00 / 0)
That SNL will have (real life) David Paterson on the show to make up for this.  That seems like the most fair thing to do.

AND (0.00 / 0)
Dude would make a spectacular guest, as he is one of the funniest people I've ever run across.  Sometimes, in fact, I think maybe his Dad bullied him into politics, and that he was by nature a comedian.  Who knows.

As far as SNL, 15 lashes with a white cane for them, I say.  They shoulda knowed better than that.

I'd love to see DP on SNL - (0.00 / 0)
What an opportunity!

Says a smart reader has predicted that Paterson will appear on SNL and will rock the house.

No apology (0.00 / 0)
SNL should not apologize.  I will be very disappointed if they do.

Putting him on the show would be good.  Ever heard of the "Colbert bump?"   No one outside of NY knows Patterson, he could not have bought the name recognition he got from the show.

Patterson was not upset for himself, but rather for others.  No one expects that the caricature is accurate.  In real life, people will readily forgive Patterson's foibles which are attributable to his limited sight.

Thought for the most part (0.00 / 0)
the impression was spot on. Armison nailed the voice, the lame jokes (New Jersey!...), the eyes, the way he held himself, and yes, Paterson admitted to some incredible shit including cocaine use in the first 2 weeks he was the Governor, and we were all just like, "well, you didn't lie, its in the past, and they weren't hookers".

The only thing toeing the line was his inability to face the camera.

Absolutely Not (0.00 / 0)
Patterson is not upset about his physical portrayal.  He is pissed about the quip of him being "thrust into a position where he is in way over his head."

This comes down to a truth hurts moment that he is using his disability to ignore the fact that it was brutally honest about how much he has sucked beginning with the congestion pricing disaster. He has lost every major battle and/or initiative that he has backed.

The wandering around the set had nothing to do with his blindness, it was a metaphor for being clueless.

P.S., I don't remember anyone on this page pooh-poohing their betrayal of Palin as a stupid, crazy sexpot--because we agreed.

Patterson has been an enormous disappointment, and the humor reflected that reality.

I don't remember anyone on this page pooh-poohing their betrayal of Palin as a stupid, crazy sexpot--because we agreed.

Portions of the "betrayal" were verbatim quotes from Palin's interviews with Gibson and Couric.  It's tough to call that unfair.

I meant to write "portrayal." My Bad.

I wasn't trying to make fun of you... (0.00 / 0)
I figured you meant "portrayal" but wasn't 100% sure.  Be that as it may, I think that Fey's portrayal of Palin was pretty reality-based.

And, even so, I thought it was appropriate to have Palin appear on the show afterward.  And by the same token, I think that Paterson should now be invited to appear on the show.
