Cornyn plays King-maker

by: Exile on Ericsson St.

Tue Jan 06, 2009 at 00:27:09 AM EST

John Cornyn, the National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman, is signaling his early support for Peter King in the 2010 Senatorial race:

"Senator Cornyn believes Peter King would be a very formidable candidate. He believes the seat could be in play, and is prepared to commit the resources to win the seat," said a senior Republican aide familiar with the meeting.

A source close to King confirmed  that the congressman is strongly considering running for the Senate. He is expected to make a final decision whether to run "soon after" Gov. David Paterson appoints a successor for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat.

If the NRSC backs Peter King in a Republican primary, I'll seriously consider sending them a check.

Well, if ever there was a time. . . (0.00 / 0)
Then the time is now for a Republican to start gearing up for an NY Senate race.  King can spend the entire two years bashing a highly unqualified, highly visible, nepotic appointment and watch for the money to roll in.  What self-respecting Republican wouldn't contribute to the campaign to de-pants a Kennedy?

I am assured that all the Democrats in this state have already thought this through quite carefully and have a plan of action in this case. . . . .

Plan of action? (0.00 / 0)
Alright, I think I am self-respecting, but, if Paterson sets this scenario up, I'm not sure there is anything I can do about it.  I'd just thank my lucky stars that at least King is a lousy candidate and it is a blue state, so we'd still have a chance with a primary... but, yeah, a Kennedy pick really would provide great leverage for expanding Republican influence in upstate NY, and a LI pol would probably gain attention and leverage down there, too.

If you know what we can do about it, clue me in.  I think we gotta hope Paterson is smarter than that-- after all, he needs to run at the same time.

It's All About Experience (0.00 / 0)
And I'm afraid I'm not aware of Patterson's preeminent experience, per sae.  After all, we're looking at a double-appointment election coming up here in 2010.

Like we're all saying, King's a buffoon.  But what he may be is a "Trial Buffoon," if you like: get national interest started in beating a Kennedy and you go great lengths toward building up a broken money machine for the next election.

Not that I've ever regarded Cornyn as being quite that bright, but you never know.

Yep. (0.00 / 0)
I, too, have problems seeing strategies that I could envision in people who are doubtless far too thick to put that much energy into strategy.

But, yeah, CK would make a great money-raising Senator-to-hate for whomever among the Republicans-- true replacement of Hillary on that level.

it may be true (0.00 / 0)
That King is able to raise a reasonable amount of money.  I'd still be a lot more worried by Giuliani or Brooks or Mahoney...and I'm not that worried by them either.

Democrats have a huge registration advantage in this state.  The only chance the Republicans have is to put up someone with crossover potential.  King has none.  He's a 1994 model running in a 2010 race.  Ask GM how that's been working out as a strategy.

I agree there's not much to worry about. . . (4.00 / 1)
. . in New York State.  But there's something in the Conservative/Republican mindset that just loves a Charge of the Light Brigade.  A lost cause means never having to say "I'm sorry for screwing up the country."  The thought of taking on Caroline Kennedy is just what Rush Limbaugh et al need to charge up the base.

John "Big John" Cornyn is one of the smartest people ever and I hope he takes advantage of the great opportunity that New York State and Peter King are providing him!  (snark)

Maybe John "Box Turtle" Cornyn is unaware that he has a few seats to defend and is going to need some serious coin to convince people to vote for a moribund party.  He's protesting the swearing in of Al Franken in Minnesota even though Norm "Suits" (frivolous lawsuits, free Armani suits) Coleman hasn't a prayer.  They've got a guy running for party chair that doesn't apologize for sending out "Barack the Magic Negro" song.

Although it's true that some Democrats in NY, like the "Diva 3" want to show that they can be as incompetent, out-of-touch and disrespectful towards their constituents as the rebuplicans, I'm not afraid of Peter King or Rudy.

Bring it on, Big John!
