Caroline Kennedy Is Out

by: phillip anderson

Wed Jan 21, 2009 at 19:38:11 PM EST

And word is that she took herself out. Everything that I have heard over the last 10 days or so was that it was hers if she wanted it. The Times has the scoop:

Kennedy Is Said to Withdraw Senate Bid

Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn from consideration for the vacant Senate seat in New York, according to a person told of her decision.

On Wednesday she called the governor, David Paterson, who is making the selection of who should succeed Senator Hillary Clinton. Her concerns about Senator Edward M. Kennedy's deteriorating health (he was hospitalized after a seizure during the inaugural lunch on Tuesday ) prompted her decision to withdraw, this person said. Coping with the health issues of her uncle, with whom she enjoys an extraordinarily close bond, was her most important priority; a situation not conducive to starting a high profile public job.

She was planning to issue a statement on Wednesday evening.

Ms. Kennedy's decision comes nearly two months after she, along with several members of Congress and leading political officials, began auditioning to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton in the coveted position.

Can't say I saw this one coming. My guess is that Paterson didn't see it coming either as she was his pick as far as I know. My guess is that this is now between Kirsten Gillibrand or Tom Suozzi. Then again, this really shakes things up.

Go Suozzi Go (0.00 / 0)
I have my fingers crossed.

Suozzi is no Democrat! (4.00 / 1)
Do you live in Nassau County?

Suozzi is a DINO. If you believe in public education, women's reproductive rights, appreciation for working people, consensus building and inclusion and government that works for people, then you are nuts to like Suozzi.

He came in with an easy act to follow in Gullota and has done nothing but bully and harangue his way through his administration. For a governing point of view, his infrastructure plans (the center piece of his "vision") is as close to where it was 7 years ago--nowhere, crime is up and traffic/ congestion/road repair are worse than ever.

Politically he has utterly failed to do any party building whatsoever. The County leg remains 10(D)-9(R) as it was before his election. There has been no improvement in town or village representation. Dems lost control of the city of Long Beach and his Cousin became Mayor of Glen Cove.

If you support vouchers, privatization, cronyism, whiny thuggery "my way or else governance" then by all means root for Suozzi. The only difference between Suozzi and Dick Cheney is a hunting license and massive personal wealth.  Suozzi has better hair, I'll give him that.  All he cares about is his own aggrandizement and figuring a way to move out of this office to somewhere higher.

That is all.

She didn't want it. (4.00 / 1)
To me that is the height of political sadness... when you have an entire establishment down on its knees in front of a NAME, when the person behind the name really does not want or relish the job.  It was so obvious from her behavior throughout this whole thing that she just didn't have the fire in the belly.

Remarkable... yet, not (0.00 / 1)
The Kennedy clan is, if nothing else, clannish.

I wish Senator Kennedy well; but, I do think that many of the other candidates might be a lot more committed to the job.

Clarifying... (0.00 / 0)
...I mean above that I wish Senator Kennedy well,

but I do think that many of the candidates for NY Senate other than Caroline might be a lot more committed to the job than Caroline, not than Senator Kennedy.

[ Parent ]
Even clarified, it's still a pretty nasty thing to say. (0.00 / 0)
Her uncle, who for most of her life has practically been a surrogate father to her, is slowly dying. Because she doesn't want to be distracted by other duties at the moment, you're going to take a shot at her, saying she's not committed enough to the job? That's a bit rude.

I don't get why some people here seem to have such a negative reaction to Caroline Kennedy. Whether you supported her for the Senate seat or not, one can at least be polite.

...But (0.00 / 0)
She's NOT committed enough to do the job. She needed an excuse and got it. She clearly didn't want it as badly as other people did, and I think she realized how far behind the 8 ball that put her.

Thanks, Amherst Guy (0.00 / 0)
That was what I was trying to get at.  Was just having trouble getting it out.  No disrespect intended, just did not think she had the commitment to the task.  Compare and contrast w/ John Edwards, for instance.

[ Parent ]
It doesn't matter how one puts it. It's still a horrible thing to say. (0.00 / 0)
The sentiment being expressed is that if she really wanted the job, she'd ignore her dying loved one in order to make herself available. That's not "dedication," that's ghoulishness. Whether she's in or out, whether she gets it or not, I think if she did decide that family was more important than politics it would behoove everyone to respect that.

Hm (0.00 / 0)
Liz Benjamin is reporting Caroline is "AWOL" or something and nobody really knows what's going on...

http://www.nydailynews.com/blo...

Something tells me the aftermath of this (however it turns out) is going to make the Blagojevich thing seem simple by comparison...  (just the confusion level, I mean...)

Olbermann (0.00 / 0)
Olbermann just said on Countdown that Kennedy family sources are now denying this story.

"Kennedy family sources" (0.00 / 0)
Maybe Caroline needs to release her own statement.

This is ridiculous... I don't see how Paterson can credibly choose her now.  It will make him look like the Kennedy family has him by the nuts.

It's so clear that she doesn't want the job, has no stomach for it and no talent for it.

This is really quite interesting.  If Caroline doesn't continue the almighty legacy, where will the Kennedys be from now on?  And if the Kennedys don't prevail, where will America be in half a day?

[ Parent ]
How is that "clear?" (0.00 / 0)
Do people routinely start campaigning for jobs they don't want?

[ Parent ]
Well (0.00 / 0)
I once interviewed for a job I wasn't sure I wanted.  I dressed up for the interview.  I did my homework.  I tried to do well in the interview.  I was offered the job.  I said no.

[ Parent ]
This isn't a courtesy interview. (0.00 / 0)
Nobody was expecting her to put herself in contention for this seat. And being sure that she didn't want it, she did more than other serious candidates have.

[ Parent ]
OK (0.00 / 0)
She really really wants it.  That's why she's come out with a statement to the press this evening (NOT).

You're right, I don't know whether the wants it or not; all I know is that at this point, I'm more than sure that I don't want HER and will have a hard time wanting her in 2010.

[ Parent ]
My money is with Gillibrand. (0.00 / 0)
I don't think there's any way that Paterson goes past the level of the Congressional delegation to pick someone--he'd get nothing but resentment from the people he passed over, whereas picking a congresscritter would generate a lot less resentment.

Pure Speculation (0.00 / 0)
If she wasn't his choice, this could mean that a selection is imminent and he called her far enough in advance of the announcement so as to allow her a chance to bow out on her own initiative, with an eye toward not hurting her chances should she choose to run for any office in the future.

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.
