NY-Sen: Is Caroline Kennedy In Or Out?

by: robert.harding

Wed Jan 21, 2009 at 22:07:25 PM EST

Despite earlier reports saying that she was out, Caroline Kennedy apparently is still in it.

From MSNBC:

Several newspapers reported Wednesday that Caroline Kennedy planned to withdraw from consideration for the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton, but NBC News reported that a Kennedy family source said it was not true.

The New York Times cited as its source a person told of her decision and reported that she called New York Gov. David Paterson to express concerns about the health of her uncle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was hospitalized Tuesday after a seizure. A statement from Kennedy could come as early as Wednesday evening, the Times reported.

However, a Kennedy family source told NBC News' David Gregory that Caroline Kennedy had not withdrawn. Two sources hinted to NBC News that there may have been a miscommunication between Kennedy and Paterson's office.

Calling this a miscommunication would be an understatement. A few hours ago, she was out. Now, it seems like she is still in it. Earlier reports said that she would be issuing a statement tonight, but she has yet to do so. She might want to do that to clear up things.

I don't think this bodes well for her. Maybe in Governor David Paterson's eyes it won't be a big deal, but there is a big difference between withdrawing and miscommunication.

media war (0.00 / 0)
We are watching a media war here, I think... because the NYT has updated its story to imply that Paterson's office is backing off its earlier statements that her withdrawal is just a rumor.

Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, Errol Cockfield, Mr. Paterson's press secretary, said the governor had referred to the assertion that Ms. Kennedy was withdrawing as "just the rumor of the day." More than an hour later, Mr. Cockfield asked that that statement not be published, but neither he nor the governor's communications director, Risa B. Heller, would respond to further questions about Ms. Kennedy.

So, the NYT seems to be standing by its story.  And "A Kennedy family source"?  who exactly?  How do we know that the Kennedy family even knows what's going on in her head?  (does anyone?)
And when it comes down to it... who the f--- cares what The Kennedy Family has to say?  Why hasn't Caroline Kennedy herself released a statement if the NYT report is erroneous?

All I know is, the maneuvering over this is really getting crass and distasteful.  Never again.  I'd rather go through a special election next time.

this is really pathetic (0.00 / 0)
it all so seems so keystone kops.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

it just makes you feel utterly ignored (0.00 / 0)
as a New York State citizen, knowing that all of this ridiculous gaming is going on among a bunch of Brahmins.  I mean, what is this all about?  I can't even figure it out any more.  Only that it has nothing to do with me.  Do they have any idea of how stupid they all look?  Her, Paterson, the Kennedys and their flunkies?  If I were a NY politician I wouldn't want to be within 500 miles of this trainwreck.  The GOP has to be laughing themselves to sleep tonight.

It really is making Blagojevich look not quite so bad.  At least he was just a lone asshole with delusions of grandeur... here we have a whole bunch of them.

They are only thinking in the present moment, and they think we are not watching and taking notes.

Eh (0.00 / 0)
I don't think this is as much of an issue to the general electorate as it is to us.  It would probably serve Gov. Patterson and New York Democrats in general if he made an anti-climactic pick from among NY's Congresswomen/men.

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

Or perhaps the gang that can't shoot straight.

Paterson's numbers are dropping by the day.  He needs to end this farce, pick someone other than Kennedy, and do it tomorrow.

loss of control (0.00 / 0)
Actually, one should step back and observe why we even have this situation at all.

We have a power vacuum that has not been adequately filled by Paterson - as much as I like him and want him to succeed.  And we know why he's here, because of the Spitzer debacle. Paterson has not got control over the situation.

The Kennedys don't seem to have control over this situation either.  Why has it been going on for hours now?  They seem unprepared for the speed of today's news dissemination.  I sat here at my computer and, before their first denial was even issued, my feed reader popped up headline after headline being published on newspaper websites all over the state, like a prairie fire.  "Caroline's Out."  And conversation threads are starting all over these newspaper reports, in every corner of the state, the peanut gallery speaks and adds to the feedback, to the political air...

Watch and learn.  You usually don't have this sort of view of the kind of clash of the elites that takes place beneath the veil of our so-called democratic process.  Now we're getting a good look tonight.

They've lost control over the behind-the-scenes political process they once commanded.  What comes after, will be increasingly unpredictable.  What rate it becomes more predictable, I can't really say.
