UPDATED: WPIX: It's Gillibrand

TV station WPIX is reporting in an "exclusive" that Governor Paterson will choose Rep Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Hillary Clinton in the US Senate.

Confirmed: Kirsten Gillibrand Chosen to Fill Clinton's Senate Seat

PIX11 News has learned Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand is the choice of Governor David Paterson to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton.  Two Congressional sources tell PIX News that the Governor will make his announcement in Albany at noon tomorrow.  He has invited members of the state's Democratic Congressional delegation to join him.

The sources told reporter Marvin Scott that the Governor has called members of the delegation for their views after Caroline Kennedy withdrew herself from consideration.  One of the contenders, longterm Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney canceled a scheduled appearance on "PIX News Closeup" Friday because of a "conflict," which she did not disclose. She too will be in Albany. According to the sources, Gillibrand, now in her second congressional term, was favored by both Senator Churck Schumer and Secretary of State Clinton.  Paterson has been under pressure to select a woman.

With most Democratic leaders in Albany coming from the New York City area, one source said this would be an important move for the Governor to have a Senator from upstate. And it is felt Gillibrand would be an asset to Paterson in any bid for election in 2010.

Grain of salt and all. I mean, it's PIX 11, for cryin' out loud, but I think they just may be right.

UPDATE: MSNBC is now reporting that Paterson has asked Gillibrand to meet him in Albany at 11am tomorrow morning, an hour before his noon announcement.

It's Gillibrand.

Lieberman in pearls (4.00 / 1)
First of all, the endless waiting and dancing and leaking has been ridiculous -- Paterson hasn't look like a decisive leader in control, and none of this has reflected well on him.

Secondly, Gillibrand's positions on the war, guns, immigration, et al., are way out of the New York mainstream. This is a state which could easily elect a Ned Lamont. Instead we're getting Joe Lieberman in pearls.

says who? (0.00 / 0)
Gillibrand's positions on the war, guns, immigration, et al., are way out of the New York mainstream.

Are you sure?

Her positions aren't mine, but she certainly does represent the views of a lot of people in New York.

Ask your fellow Dems (0.00 / 0)
We have a lot of people in New York, yes. But that's not saying much. The majority -- especially Dems -- would like limits on things like assault rifles, and a non-punitive approach to immigration. Just to pick a couple.

We have had in the past decade two Senators who ignored the overwhelming concensus of New Yorkers against the war. Schumer even admitted that he never got so much public comment on any issue other than the decision to invade Iraq, and that it was over 90% against doing so -- but he went the other way.

This is an overwhelmingly blue state. Paterson ignores that fact at his own peril.

[ Parent ]
not (0.00 / 0)
It is NOT "overwhelmingly blue."

Can we please have some facts along with our Democratic ideals?

[ Parent ]
Facts? I've got facts for 'ya... (4.00 / 1)
Sure -- here are some facts, though you have offered none, except the word "not"...

* PRES 08: Obama 62%

* GOV 06: Spitzer 69%

* A.G. 06: Cuomo 58%

* SEN 06: Clinton 67%

* SEN 04: Schumer 71%

* Heck, even Alan Freaking Hevesi got 57% in 2006 for Comptroller.

These are all landslides by standard election measures... So lopsided, a number of them weren't even seriously contested (e.g. Schumer/Mills in 2004).

Seriously: Is there another state in the Union where all top six offices have been won by Democrts by a larger cumulative margin? (Rhode Island, maybe?) It just doesn't get much bluer than here, as a statewide matter.

[ Parent ]
Ive been trying to make the same point (4.00 / 1)
Pretty much any Democrat is guaranteed around 53% in New York.

[ Parent ]
Democratic landslides (0.00 / 0)
don't make us a 100% liberal state...I know a lot of conservatives in the Gillibrand mold who voted for all of the above.

[ Parent ]
Gillibrand voted multiple times for withdrawl from Iraq beginning ASAP. (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
She voted to re-fund the war in May 2007 n/t (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
She also voted for the bill to begin troop withdrawls within 90 days at the same time. (0.00 / 0)
Virtually everybody voted to continue funding. That doesn't make her pro-war or a conservative Democrat.

[ Parent ]
I spoke with her directly when she first ran (0.00 / 0)
From her own mouth: She claimed to oppose the war but also claimed she "couldn't" do anything about it and "had to" support it. She only became a tepid opponent once others made it safe for the cowering center-right Dems to jump on board.

[ Parent ]
Is that way (0.00 / 0)
she ran ads opposing the war in 2006?

[ Parent ]
P.S. I'll believe it when/if it happens (0.00 / 0)
Remember the Post definitively announcing Gephardt as Kerry's running mate...

Pix 11 (4.00 / 1)
that's too funny.

Well, (0.00 / 0)
Gillibrand has been invited at 11, but so have all the other members of the congressional delegation...

But it's most likely Gillibrand.

Gillibrand (4.00 / 1)
IMHO if Patterson nominates Gillibrand he's DOA as the Democratic nominee for Governor.

What can we expect next -- DAP bringing Steve Levy on board as his  running mate?

I'm sorry (0.00 / 0)
I know Steve Levy and he's not the xenophobic caricature everyone's been making of him.

[ Parent ]
Patterson would be smart to change his choice and QUICK (4.00 / 2)
Gillibrand is a pro-gun, mostly pro-life, anti-immigration Democrat.  The worst part is that no other Democrat can hold a Republican district like NY-20.  I expect Gillibrand to lose the primary in 2010.

It would be a mistake to underestimate her. (0.00 / 0)
Unless Maloney decides to burn the place down, winning a primary challenge would be an extreme long shot. Same goes for unseating Paterson unless something disasterous happens to him between now and then.

Prove it (4.00 / 1)
Particularly on choice, with her A ratings from NARAL, PPFA, NOW, and EMILYs List.

It's OK for your guy or gal not to make it, but I think you are incorrect in your characterizations of her record.

And it isn't official yet.  So perhaps keep yer powder dry.

Pro-life? (0.00 / 0)
WTF she's rabidly pro-choice...NARAL endorsed her.
