Further Confirmation On Gillibrand

by: phillip anderson

Thu Jan 22, 2009 at 20:12:15 PM EST

Just talked to someone in Albany that I trust as well as a congressional staffer that apparently got a heads up about an hour ago.

Kirsten Gillibrand will be our new junior senator from New York.

Primary time (4.00 / 2)
I really hope that McCarthy goes for the primary. She'll have my money and my time. Same goes for Andy for Gov.

The accidental Governor and Senator should remain accidents.

But hey, at least it isn't Suozzi, Byron Brown or the biggest slime of the crew, Steve Levy.

McCarthy would get crushed. (4.00 / 1)
IF (big IF) it is Gillibrand, then I would caution most critics (who don't know her that well) to take a deep breath and display a little patience.

If she is appointed our Senator, she will surprise many, and she has proven that NO ONE will outwork or outcampaign her.

She has the potential to be a real star - and it strikes me as somewhat ironic and cynical for people within the party to start sniping when we just elected a President who campaigned on bringing people together, and rejecting old-style politics.

Again, we never know with the Governor just what he is going to do, but if it is Gillibrand, we should congratulate her and work to move her on our issues, instead of attacking her and giving aid and comfort to the GOP.

To be clear - everyone is entitled to their opinion and their right to express it - just think you might be a little quick on the draw there.

Wow (0.00 / 0)
She hasn't even been sworn in as Senator yet and we're already judging her.

What is that my GOP friends say about "liberals passing judgement?"

[ Parent ]
Sigh... (0.00 / 0)
There hasn't been a single Senate vacancy that has been tremendously disappointing.

Should read "hasn't been tremendously disappointing" (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
Republicans are happy (0.00 / 0)
This gives them a free House seat.

I don't buy that (0.00 / 0)
this will be a very quick election.  The best organization and money will make the difference.  Anything can happen in a special.

[ Parent ]
Republicans have been winning many special elections lately (0.00 / 0)
They are far more energized.

[ Parent ]
No Democratic Bench in the 20th (0.00 / 0)
There are already Republicans with money and organization here.  Almost any Democrat would have to start from scratch.

[ Parent ]
Great Pick! (0.00 / 0)
She can be sold upstate and in the NYC suburbs, has represented broad cross-sections of the state and has experience in tough campaigns.

Don't forget that by winning 62 percent of the vote she has real credibility in her district, if she comes and campaigns hard for the Democrats we could still retain that house seat.

We have nobody to run (0.00 / 0)
99% of elected office holders in the district are Republican.

[ Parent ]
Doesn't live in the 20th (0.00 / 0)
(which isn't a requirement), but he also doesn't have much of a profile out here.

I say Denise King and agree with Trialman that we don't need an officeholder per se.

[ Parent ]
Denise King? (0.00 / 0)
Who was completely ineffectual as Columbia County chair, because she was so busy ass-kissing elsewhere?

Who instigated primaries against progressive committee members? (Her candidates lost, per usual.)

[ Parent ]
Who to run in the 20th? (0.00 / 0)
Its true that we don't have a lot of Democratic officeholders in the 20th, but don't forget that Kirsten herself was a practicing attorney, not an officeholder, when she first ran.  One great potential candidate would be Kelly Keck, who ran a credible campaign against Clifford Crouch in the 107th Assembly District in '06.  Spoke with him this evening and he may be interested.  Time will tell.

Kirsten won in a great Democratic year (4.00 / 1)
against a drunk wifebeater.  The environment is not nearly as freindly now.  Only part of AD-107 is in NY-20 and Keck lost by 20% there.

[ Parent ]
Possibly the worst possible choice (4.00 / 1)
I regret being so hostile towards appointing Kennedy...

Salon.com speaks for me (0.00 / 0)
"Gillibrand is one of New York's more conservative Democrats, and considering the deep blue shade of statewide politics here, moderation wasn't really a necessary qualification for the pick."

MSNBC: Frigging Idiots (0.00 / 0)
Pop Quiz:
Who is the mayor of Buffalo? You're allowed to look it up.

3...
2...
1...

Since I let you look it up, you probably found out its Byron BROWN.

MSNBC Could have looked it up too. From their article on Gillibrand:

The governor was said to have invited the rest of the New York congressional delegation to Albany - along with a few other contenders, like Buffalo Mayor Byron White.

LOL (0.00 / 0)
Well thank God Paterson didn't pick Byron White...he dissented on Roe vs. Wade
