NY-20: A Few More Names For Gillibrand's Seat

by: robert.harding

Fri Jan 23, 2009 at 16:42:30 PM EST

Earlier, I outlined some of the possible contenders for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's vacant 20th congressional district seat. There are a few more names to add to the list.

A source tells me that Assemblyman Tim Gordon has expressed interest in the seat. Assemblyman Gordon is an interesting figure in state politics. He is the only Independence Party member in state government but sits with the Assembly Democrats. He isn't the biggest name mentioned on the Democratic side, but it is one worth noting.

One name I didn't include earlier was Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco. He already has his eyes on this seat, but that's nothing new for Tedisco. Tedisco, who is a Republican, probably sees this seat as a great chance to get to Washington D.C. He has talked about running for higher office (Governor) in the past, so this was expected. We will have to see if he goes through with it.

And as Liz reported earlier, Carol Schrager has officially declared her candidacy for the 20th congressional district seat. Schrager is a Democrat and is the first one to make anything official about running for this seat.

Tim Gordon has been an excellent Assemblyman (4.00 / 1)
and would surely be an excellent Member of Congress.

He's won twice in a district that includes part of the 20th, which no other Democratic hopeful has done.

And, as an Independence Party member, he would be practically guaranteed the Independence line.

He doesn't live in the 20th now, but neither do Tedisco, Brooks and Shahinfar.

This is like watching flies approach a fresh pile of horse manure (0.00 / 0)
Bzzzzzzzzzzz!! Bzzzzzzzzzzz!

Come and get it!  Mmmmmmmmm,  smells good..

Psssst.....I doubt that anyone on this growing list has the $250,000+ in cash needed just to get a primary campaign off the ground.

How much did Gillibrand and Treadwell spend in the general election just a few months ago...$10M ???

Don't let your egos get the best of you boys and girls....

I'm not sure there is a primary (4.00 / 1)
I've read that the county party heads pick the nominee because it's a special election.  Is that true?

This was a real shitty thing for Paterson to do (0.00 / 0)
We worked very hard to win this seat with Gillibrand and now we will probably never get it back.

Not never... (0.00 / 0)
The district is trending Democrat, but, we may lose it for quite a few election cycles...

[ Parent ]
We will have to at least wait until redistricting (0.00 / 0)
to get this seat back.

[ Parent ]
I just hope... (0.00 / 0)
... the candidates from both parties at least will be people who currently have their primary residence in the district.

Tedisco? Brooks? Is party-building so nonexistent in the 20th that we have to settle for candidates from the 21st?

20 State Legislative districts enter into NY-20... (0.00 / 0)
... 7 in the Senate(all held by Rs), and 13 in the Assembly(held by 8 Rs, 4 Ds, & 1 I).

Here's the full list (w/ an indication of the part of each district that's in NY-20):

SD-40 Liebell (Dutchess)
SD-41 Saland (Columbia, Dutchess)
SD-42 Bonacic (Delaware)
SD-43 McDonald (Rensselaer, Saratoga)
SD-44 Farley (Saratoga)
SD-45 Little (Essex, Warren, Washington)
SD-51 Seward (Greene, Otsego)
AD-100 Skartados (Dutchess)
AD-101 Cahill (Dutchess)
AD-102 Miller (Dutchess)
AD-103 Molinaro (Columbia, Dutchess)
AD-107 Crouch (Delaware)
AD-108 Gordon (Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene)
AD-109 Reilly (Saratoga)
AD-110 Tedisco (Saratoga)
AD-111 Magee (Otsego)
AD-112 Jordan (Rensselaer, Saratoga, Washington)
AD-113 Sayward (Essex, Saratoga, Warren)
AD-117 Butler (Otsego)
AD-127 P. Lopez (Columbia, Delaware, Greene)

What are the odds (0.00 / 0)
Can anyone charecterize the pros and cons of these potential Democratic candidates?

Who's got the best case/chance?

Special election date? (0.00 / 0)
What are the requirements for the special election date? Must be held within a certain timeframe, I'm assuming?
