NY-20: D-Trip Makes TV Ad Buy

It looks as if the DCCC is about to join he air war in the 20th. From Roll Call (sub req'd)

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is weighing into the special election in New York's 20th district with a television ad buy.

According to knowledgeable sources, the buy is scheduled to start on Friday and continue through March 31, the date of the special election. Specific details about the size of the DCCC's buy are not yet known. The committee previously was on the air with a radio ad.

On Tuesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee went on the air with about 1,200 gross ratings points of television ads on broadcast and cable in the Albany media market, which covers the majority of the district.

Something wicked this way comes (4.00 / 2)
All this money being spent by outside groups, whether the DCCC, the NRCC, SarahPAC, or anyone else, is the wrong way to hold an election.

Here's how we might as well hold elections:  At the beginning of the campaign season, polling places open.  Instead of voting booths, there are locked boxes, one for each candidate.  Anyone can go in at any time and put money in any box they want.  (By "anyone," I mean anyone; you don't have to live in the district.)  Every three months, the boxes are opened up and the money counted to see who's "ahead," who's "behind," and who is "not a viable candidate."

Finally, at the end of "election day," the boxes are opened one final time, and all the money is counted.  Whoever has the most money wins.

Thanks to a former U.S. Senator from New York and seven old men in robes, that's pretty much how elections are run today.  But it doesn't have to be that way; there is a better way, if only our elected officials would pass it.

Of course, since they are beneficiaries of the status quo, they have no incentive.  Unless, that is, people organize all over the state -- this means you!

Support "Clean Money, Clean Elections."  Tell your state Senator you want it passed this year.  Lobby your local legislature, city council, town board, whatever.  Only a large grassroots effort can make this happen.

More good news for Murphy (4.00 / 1)
The DCCC was initially reluctant to commit resources to this race, but they have obviously has a change of heart/mind.

Murphy has built up a lot of momentum this week, and if he can maintain it, he will win.

To Dan Jacoby: I, and most here, agree with you in principle.

But under the current campaign finance rules, "independent" groups connected to both parties can buy ads and/or pay for mailers.

Until the rules change for the better, efforts by Democratic "independent" groups will be needed to offset what the Republican "independent" groups will be doing.

Especially in a nationally significant Congressional special election.
