Chris Bowers: "Eric Massa is spiteful, hateful, selfish..."

by: nrafter530

Mon Mar 09, 2009 at 04:40:22 AM EDT

Chris Bowers is running out of Democrats to hate. In his latest post, hilariously titled "Eric Massa Votes Against Housing Bill Because He Doesn't Like People Outside His District" he takes Massa, one his progressive heroes during the campaign, out to task for doing what he believed was right for his district...and he didn't do it nicely;

On Thursday, freshman Eric Massa, for whom we helped raise money in 2006, 2007 and 2008, was one of the twenty-four Democrats to vote against the Help Families Stay in Their Homes Act. His reasoning for this vote is self-contradictory, spiteful, hateful, and, dare I say it, borderline unpatriotic.

Yep, he went there.

nrafter530 :: Chris Bowers: "Eric Massa is spiteful, hateful, selfish..."
Chris goes on to say the Massa admitted he was voting against his constituents interest...of which he did no such thing;

There is no way I can raise money for someone espousing this level of stupidity. And seriously--because the bill passed, the stupidity bothers me a lot more than the ideology in this case.  He admits the bill will help his constituents, and then claims he is standing up for his constituents by voting against it.  Then, he follows that Orwellian reasoning by arguing that legislation that he admits will not only people in his district, but also help people in other districts, should be opposed out of selfish spite because it doesn't help his district disproportionately.

It gets better

Someone who thinks like this should not be in Congress

So what is Chris Bowers planning to do to Congressman Massa. Well judging by how he ended his argument, I expect he will try and destroy him.

Members of the legislative branch should not only vote for legislation that disproportionately benefits their own districts.  If you say that a piece of legislation will help people, but you oppose that piece of legislation because your corner of the country does not disproportionately benefit from it, then you have displayed not only an abusive relationship to members of your own district, but a rather shocking level of antipathy toward the residents of the other 434 congressional districts.  Does Eric Massa actively dislike the people who live outside of his district?  Given that he said that the housing bill will help them, but that he voted against it anyway, it is hard to conclude otherwise.

Has Chris Bowers jumped the shark?

Here's a link to his post if you want to go over there and share your feelings.

Read it here.

While I appreciate what Bowers and Stoller do, they tend to get a little ridiculous about these things. I understand their fight against Blue Dogs. I am part of that fight. But they take it to another level. Bowers' criticisms of Massa aren't justified. Questioning someone's patriotism shows a real lack of class.

Looks like they're going to support a primary challenge (0.00 / 0)
and Chris seems to think everyone on the blogsphere will do what he says.

Did he fall down and hit his head on something? (0.00 / 0)
Does he live in some kind of self-created bubble world where he doesn't know how hard it was to get Massa elected, even with a three year campaign, Navy cred, and unified Democratic support?

I admit I don't know this guy very well, but if that's seriously his plan, then he's daft.

that's my question too (0.00 / 0)
I'm hearing some similar suggestions about Arcuri, where the political landscape is just a little more Democratic, and wondering if a lot of people are having a hard time looking beyond their circle of friends.

In both cases, I think a primary from the left would help, not hurt, their re-election chances, but, uh, huh?

In my opinion, primaries of this sort mean nothing but danger. (0.00 / 0)
First off, unless the person has done something really bad, an incumbent is unlikely to get voted out. And it just invites supporters of the person who lost to sit it out on election day. If even a couple percentage points of the base had a fit of pique and decided to stay home because they got invested with the other person, that can tip a close district--like, say, NY-29.

I recognize primaries are necessary and even useful, but trying to unseat a brand new incumbant is to my mind pretty unproductive.

that's a conventional opinion (0.00 / 0)
I just happen to think it's very wrong.

Democrats need to recognize that there is more to politics than go-along and get-along and let's not risk breaking the China.  Voters pay more attention when there's actually a contest, and unless you really think your candidate's damaged goods, there's little reason to be afraid of voters paying more attention.

Will people who lose sit on their hands?  Well, probably.  But if they're annoyed enough to start a primary, what makes anyone think they'd be enthusiastic supporters anyway?

In this case in particular, I don't think Massa has anything to worry about. Getting primaries from the left would reinforce his centrist credentials.  Unless he really screws up as a Congressman, I think he'll be able to repeat what Stan Lundine managed for a lot of years in almost the same district.  Close, perhaps, but winning.

That's your right. (0.00 / 0)
But my experience and that of a lot of other people says differently. It's not just the active supporters who get in a funk after a primary, anyone who supported the losing side is less likely to vote even if they were going to beforehand. Not to mention it provides dirt for the general election opponent to use without having to tarnish themselves.

[ Parent ]
I think what he's saying (0.00 / 0)
is a left wing primary challenger wouldn't even get rolling in this district.

I mean what is Bowers' argument going to be "Don't vote for Massa, he put you before the people of California?"

yeah that's going to hurt (rolls eyes)

A primary challenger... (0.00 / 0)
Against a man who is one of the top targets of the NRCC. Not smart.

But I welcome Bowers, et. al to the party. If they want to fund some puppet primary challenger, they can go ahead. I doubt they will feel that way in March 2010 though.

I honestly (0.00 / 0)
have never understood why Bowers, kos, etc. get so much attention.  They remind me of the Yippies in some ways - obsessed with manipulating the medium of politics (blogosphere), but not terribly knowledgeable about actual politics.  They have vague national aspirations for some sort of "influence" but have no grounding in any sort of local politics at all.

I wouldn't lump Kos in with Bowers, etc. (0.00 / 0)
Kos is a lot more effective. He doesn't see himself as some God of the blogosphere. He realizes that without his community, he would be nothing. I also see him more of a political theorist instead of a political consultant/strategist.

This with-us-or-against-us mentality needs to go out the window, especially over one vote. If Massa has a comparable voting record to Jim Marshall or Gene Taylor, fine. Chastise him all you want. But if his only flaw in office is his housing bill vote, then you better be prepared to support him in 2010.

I have heard it all today and I have received a few troll-rated comments on Open Left merely because I disagreed with Bowers and made the case for Massa. My point is clear: While I disagree with Massa's vote, I understand it. It is pretty clear to me what he was doing. And I'm sure he's wondering why it's such a crime that he voted against a bill because it didn't do enough for his district.

I do, however, take solace in the fact that about 99 percent of the 29th congressional district could care less who Chris Bowers is.

But I guarantee you they know who Eric Massa is.
