Our third mass casualty event in the last 24 hours or so.

Five children between the ages of 7 and 16 were found dead in a mobile home Saturday, apparently shot by their father, who was found dead near a casino miles from the scene, police said.
Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff, called it a domestic violence situation and a murder-suicide.
"We believe they all died of gunshot wounds," Troyer said.
Auburn police found the father, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his car near the Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn, about 30 miles south of Seattle. Pierce County deputies checked the mobile home, which is about 20 miles southeast of the casino, and found four of the children dead in their beds and the fifth in the bathroom.

This is madness.

We've always had a lot of people close to the edge, emotionally and psychologically, but the present economic climate is pushing them beyond their limits to cope. Combine that with a violent media culture that bombards the citizenry 24/7, and the easy availability of firearms, and it's hardly surprising that the nation is coming unglued.

There are desperate people all over the globe, many with far less fallback options than even the poorest Americans have. 99.98% of humanity does not kill all of their children even in the most hopeless situations.

Yes, the current economic climate will push some small portion of that 0.02% over the edge. But this act is madness nonetheless.

Besides, the article indicates this was a murder/suicide stemming from domestic violence ("a father killed his five children and then himself after learning his wife was leaving him for another man") with no indication of economic distress. (Living in a trailer park may not be most people's idea of heaven, but it does not automatically mean one has hit the end of the economic rope.)

NOTE: I was born in one of the poorest countries on earth, (today 35-50% ravaged by AIDS as well). What many Americans might consider reaching the bottom of the barrel would be considered a golden opportunity to others.
