Same Sex Marriage Debate Comes to New York

by: BingChester

Tue Apr 14, 2009 at 13:10:37 PM EDT

Criticize Governor Paterson all you want, but one area where Paterson continues to be reliably progressive is in civil rights and liberties.  His push for reform against the Rockefeller Drug Laws was one great sign, and now Governor Paterson plans to introduce the same-sex marriage bill.  After Vermont's successful legalization movement, it was only a matter of time until New York considered the subject.  Here's the news clip, over the fold, plus some analysis.
BingChester :: Same Sex Marriage Debate Comes to New York
Gov. David A. Paterson will announce on Thursday plans to introduce legislation to legalize same-sex marriage, according to people with knowledge of the governor's plans.

Mr. Paterson's move, which he first signaled last week after Vermont became the fourth state to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed, reflects the governor's desire to press the issue with lawmakers in Albany as other states move ahead with efforts to grant more civil rights to homosexuals.

We all knew it was only a matter of time until the debate came to be, so the more important question is whether this bill has any chance at passing.

There's no doubt that this will get out of the Assembly.  Shelly Silver supports the bill and a similar version easily passed in 2007.  The Senate is a bit more tricky.  We know that the Gang of 3 generally resists efforts and gay marriage was an important part of their rebellion against Malcolm Smith as Majority Leader in January.  One key strategy might be to empower issue-orgs against Republicans in moderate/Democratic regions.  We can go after the remaining Queens/Long Island Republicans on this issue a lot more effectively than against the zealot anti-equal rights Democrats in our own caucus.

What are your thoughts on the bills chances in 2009?

I don't think the bill has a chance in 2009. (0.00 / 0)
2013 will be the year NYS legalizes Gay Marriage (if the courts don't get there first)

The courts already ruled in 2006 (0.00 / 0)
gay marriage would have to come through legislation in Albany.

Even if it doesn't pass, I will be very happy to finally have (0.00 / 0)
Senators on the record, so we can see who to support and who to oppose in upcoming primaries and elections.

Bring it on.

Assemblyman Thiele supports gay marriage (0.00 / 0)
Assemblyman Fred Thiele (R-Sag Harbor) will vote yes...a fifth Republican vote;

"I am committed to the civil rights of all New Yorkers," Thiele said in a statement released by Log Cabin (Republicans). "I didn't support the bill in 2007 because I thought equal rights could be guaranteed through civil unions."

"Since then more states have experimented with civil unions as separate but equal, only to find that discrimination persisted in health care and other areas. The only way to ensure equality is by giving all couples access to the same civil right - the right to marry."
