NY-20: Cue The Fat Lady: Final Tally Shows 273 Vote Murphy Lead

by: phillip anderson

Fri Apr 17, 2009 at 16:55:39 PM EDT

The final tally of the paper ballots and the machine recanvasses from all 10 counties per the BoE:

Murphy - 79,839
Tedisco - 79,566

The only votes left to count are the 1,300 challenged ballots and attorneys for both campaigns will be in court Monday morning arguing over them. Regardless of how those arguments go, there just isn't any credible way to make Tedisco the winner here, no matter what he and his lawyers say.

The long and the short of it is this: Murphy has won. Tedisco has lost. Sure, it was close, but it's now effectively over. Tedisco's Escape From Albany plan is deader than a doornail, folks.

It's time for Tedisco to make that obligatory phone call. It's time for him to concede.

Woo-hoo! (4.00 / 8)
On behalf of New Yorkers everywhere, I congratulate Mr Murphy on his win, and I thank him for helping to remove Tedisco as Assembly minority leader.  Nothing like killing two birds with one stone.

Killing two birds (4.00 / 9)
Now if we could find a way to rid our political life of one Stone...

Tedisco is between a rock and a hard place. (4.00 / 4)
If no more votes are counted, he loses by 273.  If more votes are counted, he almost certainly falls further behind.  Ironically, he may now choose to argue that they should count some of the very votes he challenged.

Maybe, just maybe... (4.00 / 4)
he was soooo sneaky that he challenged ballots that he thought were for him! And he'll come from behind to wins this thing.

Yeah, that's the ticket!

And if maybe we could lose him as... (4.00 / 2)
...my representative to the Assembly.  I have to hope, at least, that 2010 will not be a repeat of 2008's uncontested election for his Assembly seat.

No rush for Tedisco (4.00 / 2)
I agree that Murphy will almost certainly win.

But I think the ballots should go to the judges first.

We can wait a week to pop the cork.

Although I have this sneaking suspicion that most of the challenged ballots have Murphy' name checked on them...Tedisco seem to want to make absolutely sure of that.

Sucks for him now.

Tedesco's argument: (4.00 / 2)
just count the remaining Tedesco votes and throw out the remaining Murphy votes.

Poor Jimmy (4.00 / 5)
everything that could have gone wrong for him, has gone wrong. I'll call this Murphy's law.

Does anyone have a solid number for... (4.00 / 1)
... the number of uncounted votes (i.e. challenged votes) which remain?

A contact of mine got a number around 1,300 from the State BOE, but other sites such as Politico peg it as around 1,700.

Either way, Murphy's lead should be insurmountable, especially given the large number of Democrats challenged by Tedisco. (In Columbia County, the ratio of Tedisco to Murphy challenges was about 10 to 1.)

But I'm curious about the actual numbers anyway.

To the best of my knowledge (4.00 / 1)
it's just shy of 1300. I don't know where that 1,700 number came from. I haven't seen any indication that it is that high.
