RFK Jr. supports Gillibrand

by: devtob

Tue Apr 21, 2009 at 19:38:59 PM EDT

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. got together yesterday at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan to attract attention to a proposal to provide funding for environmental education programs in schools.

Media coverage was scant, it's a big city after all, but NY 1 did a short piece that included RFK Jr. voicing strong support for our new Senator.

Which I thought was remarkable, and diaryable, given all the controversy over his cousin Caroline's "candidacy" for the Senate appointment.

devtob :: RFK Jr. supports Gillibrand
Gillibrand and RFK Jr. did an event with students from the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School to publicize her proposal to provide $100 million over five years for environmental education programs that are endangered as local school districts across the country deal with difficult budgets.

Here's Gillibrand's take on the issue, from her website:

During these tough economic times, we need to continue investing in environmental education to prepare our students for the new green economy. The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School is a model for environmental education. Their focus and dedication needs to be replicated here in New York and throughout the country.

No Child Left Inside provides critical funding to ensure that our children receive hands-on education that connects them with environment and prepares them for the future. Investing in education is one the most important things we can do, and I am committed to improving educational opportunities for all of our children.

Kennedy also had good things to say about about environmental education in the press release, but what was really newsworthy is what he said about Gillibrand to NY 1:

She's been great.

She's been taking direction from the environmental community and we've found it very, very, very easy to work with her and she's going to be a great Senator.

After that, the reporter asked if the Kennedy family is behind Gillibrand.

Kennedy replied:

Oh yeah.

We have been from the beginning.

I assume that what RFK Jr. means by the "beginning" is after his cousin decided to withdraw from consideration for the appointment, and Gov. Paterson decided to appoint Gillibrand.

Kennedy did not formally endorse Gillibrand, but he came pretty close.

Whatever, RFK Jr.'s on-camera statement belies the idea that some pundits and blog commenters have promoted that the Kennedys are still pissed about Gillibrand's appointment, and will work to defeat her in a primary next year.

RFK Jr. has been devoted to environmental issues for most of his adult life, working to clean up the Hudson River, and as co-director of the Environmental Litigation Clinic at Pace University School of Law and as senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Gillibrand is excellent on the environment, earning a 95 percent rating from the League of Conservation Voters in 2007, and a 100 last year.

I know that RFK Jr. and Gillibrand are not perfect -- he has opposed the Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound and she had taken positions on gun control and immigration as a representative of a conservative upstate district that she is naturally modifying now that she represents the whole state.

I also know that Gillibrand is now serving in the Senate seat that RFK Jr.'s father served in, until he was assassinated.

So his informal endorsement yesterday has a lot more real meaning than the absurd sniping from the downstate pundit peanut gallery.

Gillibrand has the support of Chuck Schumer, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and now, evidently, the New York part of the Kennedy family.

Those who might challenge her in a Democratic primary next year have no such support.

Which is yet another political indicator that Gillibrand will be our Senator for as long as wants to be.

The NYC newspapers don't get it yet, (4.00 / 6)
but Gillibrand is an excellent Senator.

And will win election next year, and re-election in 2012, with ease.

Very fine Candidates from the 20th (4.00 / 3)
Democrats in the 20th CD can feel very proud of Senator Gillibrand and soon to be Congressman Scott Murphy (hopefully this election is decided soon!). Both of these Democrats will be forces to be reckoned with in the Senate and the House because "they get it!" and they are highly intelligent.

How Much Does It Matter? (0.00 / 0)
I'm skeptical that the Kennedy's support does much for Gillibrand. Really, how many people's minds would be changed if he went one way rather than the other? Nor do I think that the other politicians' support, in and of themselves, matters much.

What does matter for a primary contest is money (unfortunately). Gillibrand is an excellent fundraiser, and other politicians can provide additional help in that regard. But if another candidate is capable of raising the money, then I don't see why there wouldn't be a competitive primary regardless of who comes out in favor of whom because I think most voters don't care much about endorsements. There is a question of whether the DSCC would get involved, but since the seat seems almost certain to stay Democratic no matter what, I'm not sure why they'd get involved in a primary contest.

If anything secures Gillibrand's position, it will be her money scaring off potential opposition, not RFK's words.

Disagree (4.00 / 2)
I think it is pretty cynical to think that only cash counts.  Certainly this blog is dedicated to the idea that thoughts, persuasive writing/videography and consideration of the viewpoints of others make a dent in the democratic process.  And, there are such things as "opinion leaders"-- the NY Times is one, but, RFK, Jr. is one, too.  Some people I respect-- people who are considered opinion leaders themselves-- care a lot about what RFK, Jr. thinks

That said, I really hope that RFK, Jr., who has been a very active advocate of some very important causes, puts the lid on all the stupid gossip-rag-type stuff about personal vendetta on the part of the "Kennedy family" toward our able and impressive new Senator.  I actually think that most of the Kennedy family is bigger than that-- and more interested in the well-being of the nation and the proper function of democracy than in their cult following.

Who Is Paying Attention? (0.00 / 0)
I don't think most New Yorkers know who RFK Jr. is, much less what he thinks. Some of us who follow politics closely do, but the vast majority of people both in New York and nationwide simply aren't paying attention. Any guess as to how a poll on the matter would come out?

As for the unfounded rumors of a family "vendetta," again I think that's a lot of inside baseball that only a small portion of voters care about; and even among those that care, I'm doubtful that it changed any minds regardless of whether it was true or not.

I write frequently about ideas and policy, and I hope they make a difference. But the issue from the post was essentially about a challenge to Gillibrand, and I'm not going to pretend that all the ideas in the world will matter in an election without the money needed to mount a serious campaign. It's not being cynical to recognize reality. Take away RFK Jr.'s statement, and I really don't see much of a difference in Gillibrand's position. RFK Jr.'s statement may make her supporters happy, but I just don't think it has much of an effect on the political landscape. On the other hand, take away her fundraising and I think you'd see a very different playing field going into 2010.

By the way, I'm a strong supporter of public campaign financing. If we had it, I think again we'd have a very different scenario for 2010.

Well (4.00 / 1)
what would a primary challenger to Gillibrand have to campaign on? Are they going to run a campaign based on Gillibrand's House voting record? Are they going to try to out-liberal her? If that's the campaign an opponent is running, having someone like RFK Jr. on your side is really helpful.

Again, Who Is Paying Attention? (0.00 / 0)
What would RFK Jr. actually do in a campaign? Again, I doubt many New Yorkers know who RFK Jr. even is, much less give weight to what he says. We have to remember that we are the political junkie class. I wonder how many people could name Gillibrand as their Senator (it would be an interesting poll question).

Once a campaign starts, the candidates' records matter. The candidates' positions matter. But what someone else that few people know says about someone's positions? I think the impact is marginal at best. I think endorsements in general are highly overrated. But there's always a chance I'm wrong.

Um, dude, what planet are you living on? (4.00 / 1)
You think more people are going to pay attention to position statements and voting records than know who Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is? I think you've got to come up for some air.

In any event I'd be willing to bet you that the Democratic primary voters are a LOT more likely than average to know and care who RFK Jr. is.

This Planet (0.00 / 0)
It's a good point that Democratic primary voters will probably be somewhat more informed than voters generally--though I'd still like to see the numbers on who can properly identify people like RFK Jr., both among the general population and likely primary voters.

But I also think that when voting time comes around, people make up their own minds and are rarely influenced by what someone else says. Think about the last time an endorsement influenced your vote.

But unless someone does some polling on these matters, we're all just speculating.

His name alone is important (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
People who follow environmental issues (4.00 / 1)
know who RFK Jr., from his decades of work to help clean up the Hudson River.

And many more know him for his name, which has a certain political cachet in New York.

Another progressive falls for Gillibrand (0.00 / 0)
Still, I'm not shocked considering that RFK Jr. pledged his support to Hillary Clinton while the other notable members of the clan were supporting Barack Obama.

He's one of the best progressive minds out there, but RFK Jr.'s picks for candidates don't often match his ideology. I can see him giving the "home state" endorsement to Hillary, but we're talking about intrastate politics now. Maybe Gillibrand is using hypnosis.

I'll find out Sunday as I am meeting Senator Gillibrand (yes, you're reading this correctly). Now that the Senator has decided to meet Rockland County constituents at the Nyack Street Fair, has implemented the "Sunshine Report" and is now talking about closing the gun-show loophole, I figure why not.

I've got some really pressing questions to ask her about alternative energy, anyway.

If I come back blathering about how great Gillibrand is, you guys will have to decide whether its mind control or not.

Or, maybe.... (4.00 / 1)
...she is just a really talented elected official, eh?

[ Parent ]
Good luck. She's quite engaging, and her issue knowledge is impressive. (4.00 / 1)
