Slow down, Senators

by: simonstl

It's not been a good few months for Democratic State Senators. First Hiram Monserrate, now Kevin Parker:

Mr. Parker was arrested on Friday night after the police said he had chased down the photographer, William C. Lopez of The New York Post, who was on assignment outside the home of the senator's mother.

Mr. Parker was charged with felony and misdemeanor criminal mischief, assault and menacing at the 67th Precinct station house in East Flatbush after the episode on Avenue H, near East 37th Street, the police said.

Now maybe, just maybe, there's a good explanation for all of this. Perhaps Parker will return to his leadership posts (Smith stripped them) after this all gets explained.

It all just makes me wonder, though, whether the anger management training Ada Smith refused with her plea bargain might be a good idea all round.

more hypocrisy (0.00 / 0)
"Now maybe, just maybe, there's a good explanation for all of this."

Now there's a sentence you'll never see on this site if a Republican is accused of something.

The Albany Project.  Bought and paid for by the Democrat Senate Conference.

Your first two lines were fine (0.00 / 0)
There's nothing wrong with a little criticism.  Your last line makes you sound like an idiot, however, and invalidates anything else you might have said.

New Yorkers against Harold Ford

Well since the Republicans (0.00 / 0)
tend to get arrested for crap they vehemently speak out against, yeah, we tend to be harder.

When you deride homosexuals, only to end up being one, bitch about family values, then end up with prostitutes, and go on tirades against corruption, only to be outed as on the take, you get treated worse.

It's one thing to be a criminal...it's another to be a criminal AND a hypocrite.

So what? (0.00 / 0)
Look around, does this site look like it is nonpartisan? It's a Democratic leaning site, get over it.

I was being sarcastic, actually (0.00 / 0)
though I guess I left open the possibility of this staying alleged, unlikely though it may be.  We'll see!

Senator Smith's Statement (0.00 / 0)
STATEMENT FROM SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MALCOLM A. SMITH

"After learning of the incident involving Senator Kevin Parker, I have decided to strip the senator of his leadership position as Majority Whip, and Chairman of the Energy Committee, effective immediately.

Furthermore, payment of the stipend for his leadership position has been suspended.

These are serious charges which demand the attention of the proper authorities, and my decision today will stand until resolution of the proceedings that Senator Parker faces."

These steps were taken swiftly and are the most severe penalties the Majority Leader can hand out.

We've got some work ahead of us.

This isn't helping. (0.00 / 0)
I didn't know it was a felony to chase someone.

That said, in the words of Fletcher Reede, Stop Breaking the Law, Assholes!

Which is more likely to be arrogant, (4.00 / 1)
...cops or elected officials?  Hmm.  Pots and kettles, gotta watch 'em all for it, I think.

I have to imagine (4.00 / 1)
I have to imagine I'd be pretty pissed if someone was on assignment outside the home of my mother too.

That said, Parker needs to calm himself down.

Timing (0.00 / 0)
Is it possible that Monserrate (and now Parker) are being kept in the Senate through the end of June only because we need 32 votes to pass anything?  If there are any resignations sometime in July, we'll have our answer.

Coincidentally, a mid-to-late July resignation means the special election can be scheduled along with the Sept. 15 primary.  If there is a fall session, the new Senators can be seated in time to vote; meanwhile, no legislative business will be interrupted.

Timing is everything.

Neither will resign (0.00 / 0)
Before, during, or after session.

Absurd post re: good explanantion (0.00 / 0)
Don't be an apologist because you strip yourself of credibility. Other than Guy Vallela (sp) it seems it is our party (albeit from NYC) that gets into trouble and not the GOPers. Maybe it was sarcastic, but it certainly didn't seem like it.  You don't want to sound like Senator Kruger (no, I didn't post this):
