As I plan on heading to law school in the fall, I've been following closely the names being mentioned as a possible Supreme Court replacement for Justice Souter. Sonia Sotomayor for the 2nd Circuit Court located in New York, is by far the best choice for Obama to pick as Souter's replacement.
Sotomayor grew up in the Bronx housing projects in a poor neighborhood whose mother was a nurse and her father was a blue collar worker. President Obama is looking to appoint someone who can bring their life experiences to the court, and Sotomayor certainly fits the bill. Most judges on the court grew up in affluent areas and had to overcome little diversity.
Sotomayor did not let her diabetes diagnoses at age 8 stop her; she graduated from Princeton University and afterward Yale Law School. She served as an Assistant DA in NYC and her credentials are impeccable.
Sotomayor was initially appointed to the courts by President George H.W. Bush after a successful career as an attorney. She has served in the Appellate Court since 1998 and has since moved center left in ideology.
Sotomayor would also become the first Hispanic justice on the court, and only the third female justice in the Court's history (O'Connor, Ginsberg). It is time that the court resemble that of the American spirit, rather than nine white men. As a New Yorker, I would be proud to have Sotomayor on the court. I would also love to see conservative groups and Republican officials try to bring down the first Hispanic woman being nominated to the court, who is well qualified, who originally received her position by a Republican president. They would have a field day.
