Would "Speaker Brodsky" be a change?

The New York Sun has an article on speculation that Assemblyman Brodsky would like to be Speaker, though they don't make it sound like he's looking for a Bragman-style coup.

I like Brodsky, some days. I thought his recent op-ed was pitiful, but it sort of makes sense if he's aiming to become Speaker.

Here's a hard question, though. Would Speaker Brodsky really be that much different from Speaker Silver? Would there be opportunities (outside of Westchester) for change?

[Update] I hit post, then saw NYCO has an interesting answer already:

but honestly, if this is the choice, I’d rather see a Speaker who has too much pride than one who merely has no shame.

Wow.

It seems I always have to add this coda whenever I post about Richard Brodsky...

...I do like the guy.  Really.  I think he is a sincere public servant.

If my writing wasn't clear, I meant to indicate Brodsky as being the "pride" and Silver as being the "shameless."

The fact is that it doesn't matter what a politician SAYS.  It doesn't matter what their ego and pride and emotion drive them to say, and it doesn't even matter if they actually believe it.  What matters is the behavior

In the course of reform you will always run into powerful people who yell, kick, scream, live in the past and deny the obvious even as they oh so grudgingly do the right thing (all while continuing to lambaste the reformers and insist on not giving them any credit whatsoever).

I don't know if Brodsky is one of those, but I know Silver *isn't*.

I should have included more context so it would have been clearer what you said.

I was just surprised to see my question answered even before I'd asked it!

With Brodsky as speaker you can bet he would do everything in his power to not just turn the Senate Democratic, but to get rid of it altogether.  Remember that unicameral legislature plan he used to plug?

Anyone would be better than Shelly (0.00 / 0)
I used to like Brodsky and even considered supporting him for AG before he dropped out. But after that op-ed, I lost ALL respect for him.  He used to be a reformer, but as we all know, Albany absorbs reformers (hat tip).

Yes, but after the Westchester schools thing, Brodsky now has The Rage[tm]!  (i.e., from the old Grudge Matches... anyone remember those?)

Can he be the $120 billion man?

Just in my own not terribly well-informed opinion, most anything that breaks the inertia, disrupts the well-understood backscratching machine, makes legislators actually have to think about what they are doing once in a while, might be helpful.

Right now, there are plenty of people in both houses that think things are just fine, and will keep robotically perpetuating it indefinitely.

I think that it could have a good effect if more people, from Shelly and Joe down to the individual legislators, got challenged frequently. It might shake off some of the satisfaction too many there have with the status quo.

Term limits. Now THAT would be a change.
