NYC-Mayor: Weiner's Out

by: Roatti

Wed May 27, 2009 at 11:11:52 AM EDT

Rep. Weiner just published an op-ed in the Times titled "Why I'm Not Running for Mayor":

The other truth is that the Supreme Court decision in 1976 in Buckley v. Valeo, which allows candidates to spend however much they want on their own races, makes it possible for billionaires to swamp middle-class candidates. In this case, a sports analogy is apt: If one football team has 110 players on the field, the team with 11 has a hard time getting through the blocking and tackling on the crowded turf.

The personal choice for me is whether to run for mayor this year. I've taken stock of my life, my work in Washington and decided that now is not the right time to run. I believe I have a contribution to make in Congress fighting for New Yorkers. (I'd also like to build a family.)

Essentially he makes 2 points: 1) it's good to be in Washington right now with Obama and huge Democratic majorities so he can be involved in lots of progressive lawmaking, and 2) Bloomberg will spend such ungodly amounts of money he would have no chance of winning.  Both are true.

Bloomberg's re-election was already essentially a fait accopmpli, but now it's basically as in the bank as you can get.  I don't see any of the remaining candidates, Bill Thompson or Tony Avella pulling this thing off.

Weiners never Quit. (0.00 / 0)
I mean Winners never Quit, Quitters never Win.

That's Twice for Tony.  There won't be a Third.

Oh, and I assume the "build a family" line means he won't be challenging Gillibrand either . . .

Weiner is a fan of Gillibrand I hear (0.00 / 0)

Can we still (4.00 / 1)
...hope for Thor to strike him with a thunderbolt or something?  It's none of my biz, cuz I don't live there, but, I sure don't see how it is that all these NYC folks who are so worried about Senator Gillibrand being not far enough to the left can't somehow get their act together to throw that bum Bloomberg out on his ear.  They just accept that their city is for sale?

That's Hilarious (4.00 / 1)
And it pretty much will take some sort of Act for Bloomberg not to win.

Marvel is making a Thor Movie btw, with the guy who played Kirk's father in the latest Star Trek as Thor, Samuel L. Jackson as Col. Nick Fury, and Kenneth Branagh to direct.

It's Hammer Time.

RE:NYC-Mayor: Weiner's Out (0.00 / 0)
first of all so far in this race bloomberg has spent close to 20 million dollars and has only a 10 point lead over thompson.
secondly, with obama and patersons backing against a Republican in the worlds most bluest city look for the dems to come together against bloomberg in november.

now for some news
earlier this year bloomberg asked to re-join the democratic party to run in november but city law said that he had to get the ok from all five democratic borough chiefs in order to run in a primary, all but 2 of the chiefs said no and he had to switch to become a republican again because if he had of run as an independent he would of then risked running against 2 oppenents instead of one.

now if it was a "fait accopmpli" that he was going to win and if he was such a great mayor, you would think that those democratic heads would have been beggin for him to join there ticket.

in closing, the last time people predicted that a pol was going to win mon ths before the election hillary was going run against rudy and bloomberg was going to run as an indy.

bloomberg will lose in november because thompson will run a very grassroots race and blame every problem in the city against not bloomberg but on  the republicans and with obamas stealth support, bloomy will lose a very close election i'll say 51-49, remember currently there are no GOP members of congress in new york city, and except for staten island there are no GOP members in the city council. there are going to make bloomy spend every dollar he has and he will leave with his rich tail between his legs. Sorrrrrrrrrrrrrrry! wrong again.
