Another Republican House seat opens up

by: Dan Jacoby

Tue Jun 02, 2009 at 10:08:38 AM EDT

MSNBC reports that President Obama is set to name Rep. John McHugh (NY-23) as his Secretary of the Army.  This would create another special election in the northernmost part of the state.

Let the speculation begin -- who would run, and who is likely to win?  I refuse to speculate, because I have no knowledge of that district, but someone on this website must know something.

Dare I Say... (4.00 / 3)
Darrel Aubertine? The Congressional District is a Republican one, and if the Senate composition wasn't so narrow, I'd be the first one to say Aubertine should run. But we need him in the State Senate, so I hope he does not run, though he would make a great candidate. Aubertine has great appeal across partisan lines.

Aubertine would be great (0.00 / 0)
and would represent that district fantastically. It really is a shame we need him so bad in the Senate...

Maybe we're looking for the easy road out (4.00 / 1)
We won NY-20 with a venture capitalist whose name no one knew vs. the state assembly's minority leader.

I think we cna coalasce behind a good Democrat, no matter what the name is.

I think (0.00 / 0)
Darrell Aubertine could win this district, but there would go our Senate majority, so not him.

The only Republicans of note I can think of here are Dede Scozzafava and Janet Duprey and I think Teresa Sayward lives here...all voted for marriage equality, Sayward co-sponsered, so the GOP won't nominate them...and if they do, they deserve to win.

The only Democrats other than Aubertine I can think of are Bill Magee from Madison County and Addie Jeanne Russell.

I can't think of who else.

Either way, we should definitely make a strong play for the seat. Obama won it, I think Gore won it. Add another seat in Congress, bring our delegation to 27-2.

Hmm. Maybe not Magee or Aubertine (0.00 / 0)
I think Aubertine would have the smarts to stay put and do the major job he has signed on for in the NYS Senate.  As for Magee, I am not seeing it.  He is not at all young, really comfy where he is, and I have heard he has some health issues from time to time, too.  Just don't see him being ambitious and driven enough to wage what would have to be a hard-fought campaign.

On the Republican side, there is every reason in the world for Betty Little to go for it... and Dede Sozzafava, too.

If Betty Little wins (0.00 / 0)
Is there any chance we could pick up her Senate seat?

[ Parent ]
Worth a shot for sure (0.00 / 0)

An interesting note (0.00 / 0)
Mchugh once was in the same State Senate seat Aubertine sits in. McHugh succeeded Hugh Douglas Barclay as State Senator (that Barclay is the father of Will Barclay, the person Aubertine defeated for the seat). And the person who succeeded McHugh was Jim Wright, who would then be succeeded by Aubertine. I am going to stop now with the Aubertine speculation, since we need him so badly in the Senate, at least until redistricting.
