| Congressman Gregory Meeks, who was once being talked about as a possible candidate for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, endorsed Gillibrand today as she picks up more support from fellow Democrats for 2010.
Meeks praised Gillibrand for her work in New York City during her short time as senator and said that he will be a "partner" with Gillibrand on issues impacting his district.
"I've seen Kirsten at work in our communities, and you can tell where her heart is - it's with New York City children and families," Congressman Meeks said. "There's nothing more important to her than a bright future for every New York City child, and making sure all parents have the resources they need to provide for their families. Since day one, she's been putting together an aggressive legislative agenda that fights for my constituents - from affordable health care to quality after-school programs and community safety initiatives. I look forward to having her as a partner in these efforts for a long time to come, and that's why I'm proud to endorse her for U.S. Senate."
Meeks wasn't the only one to endorse Gillibrand. In what could be considered a major endorsement, Rev. Al Sharpton also endorsed Gillibrand and commended her for the work she has done to address the needs of families and children.
"In less than five months, Senator Gillibrand has demonstrated an ability to bring people together, listen to their challenges, and forge solutions to the problems they face," Reverend Sharpton said. "I was impressed that the day after being selected to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate, she came down to the House of Justice in Harlem to hear the real concerns of the voiceless. I am proud to endorse her today because I believe she will be a strong, passionate advocate for children and families. I believe she is committed to working with President Barack Obama to create jobs and improve education for minorities in New York City and across the state. As a mother of two young children, Senator Gillibrand understands what hardworking families are going through at this difficult time. Above all, Senator Gillibrand knows that all families need access to good-paying jobs and quality education so that their children can succeed."
All of these endorsements Gillibrand is picking up are important. These are especially important because Meeks and Sharpton are two important African American leaders. Gaining the support of all the diverse communities in New York City and across the state is important for Gillibrand. The two endorsements from Meeks and Sharpton show she is making progress and winning over folks from all backgrounds and from all over New York.
