UPDATED: Session Postponed; Monserrate To Wait One More Day

After first reporting that Sen. Hiram Monserrate was sticking with the Republicans, it looks like he's going to take another day and then decide where he stands.

There have been negotiations with both sides trying to win over Monserrate. After a long wait today, the session has been postponed until tomorrow.

If Monserrate decides to come back to the Democrats, it will create a 31 to 31 split - a nightmare scenario that would probably mean nothing will get accomplished with such a split. (This is why there should be an odd number of senators.)

everyone has to take back the mean things they've said about him? (For now, even everyone on both sides?)

My guess is that nothing much will get accomplished the rest of this session anyway.

Odd number of Senators (4.00 / 2)

The U.S. Senate has an even number, and their way of breaking a tie is through the Vice President. What we need is to change the NY Constitution so that a vacancy in the Lt. Gov. position doesn't stay vacant for long.

We should also look at the need for a majority of Senators present and voting (not necessarily all Senators) to be all that's needed to pass things; the budget delay, at the last minute, all because one Senator took sick, just can't be tolerated.

Perhaps we should also look at the way the number of Senators is set. There should be a fixed number, rather than the insane method we have now.

It's a pointless waste of money to have two houses when we have to by law distribute them both on population.

In a few years, once the Dems have firm control over both houses, it will be even stupider.

We need a unicameral legislature if we are ever going to get anything done. And to get that, we need a Constitutional Convention.

Hell, we might improve New York's very minimalist Bill of Rights if we did that. And get rid of the very large masses of gunk in the Constitution, largely about the original Assembly districts and the Erie Canal.
