Looking beyond the leadership

by: simonstl

Yesterday's New York Times editorial, "The Lost Arts of Albany", seems likely to draw the same kind of response from the Senate leadership as the "goo-goo" editorials they've noted when convenient and ignored when inconvenient.

The editorial takes a slightly different approach than most I've seen, though, and even takes a chance in identifying Senators of both parties they think could work through the issues:

We suggest these Democrats: Liz Krueger of Manhattan, Andrea Stewart-Cousins of Westchester County, David Valesky of Syracuse and José M. Serrano of the Bronx. Republicans should include Charles Fuschillo of Long Island, Frank Padavan of Queens, John DeFrancisco of Syracuse and Elizabeth Little of Glens Falls.

This group will not agree on issues, but they can agree to make their house work less like an autocracy.

Now they've done it, painting scarlet letters on these folks as "the people the Times thinks know better than their leadership". I'm not sure they could have made their point without doing that, but it seems like a case where naming people ensures that they won't be able to talk. But maybe...

At the same time, though, they have a good point. I think back to Liz Krueger's comments on "to the victor goes the spoils", and wonder how far down the leadership hierarchy that attitude goes. I suspect that it weakens substantially.

It's hard to imagine Senators, perhaps especially Republican Senators, breaking party ranks to talk about this. Still, it seems like a worthy prayer for a Sunday morning.

One other problem with the Times (0.00 / 0)
As the Times notes, there are issues that can be put off without serious consequences.  The push for marriage equality, however, is not one of them.

This issue has been too long getting to the point where it can pass.  Too many people are denied basic rights in this state because we don't have marriage equality.  Every day we delay is another day we don't live up to the ideals on which our country was based, and people are made to suffer as a result.

In addition, this is not an issue where the specifics are all that complicated.  Campaign finance reform, farm labor practices, and many other items -- these are far more complex issues, and should be properly vetted, viewed, and debated, and the consequences of legislative action determined as best as possible before action is taken.  But equality?  That's easy -- you're either for equality or you're against it.

seems to be a problem with Paterson now (0.00 / 0)
as this article suggests.

Good for them for naming names... (0.00 / 0)
The fact is, taking down our corrupt and useless leadership (and the whole corrupt and useless system) is the only thing that makes sense as progressives' #1 objective in NY state government.  Until we have this, we have only the illusion of causes to fight for -- even good policy enacted by corrupt and unaccountable politicians is tainted, and its success will only feed the beast.  If we're happy to see the secretive power-brokers make policy, we will justly be punished at the polls as the party of secretive tyrants.

Good for the NYT editorial.  They're saying, you, the people of NY, do not have representation in the legislature until the all-too-familiar names have been run out or marginalized.

An interesting list (4.00 / 1)
Almost all of the people the Times lists are, have recently been, or are certain to be, prime targets by the opposing party in elections.  These are people who do not, for the most part, occupy "safe" seats, so they are definitely people who would stand to gain much by doing what the Times suggests.
