Paterson leaves marriage equality out of special session

I'm not sure this was really a surprise, but Governor Paterson seems to be leaving marriage equality out of plans for the Senate special session he's calling.

I see two possible reasons for this:

  1. He's trying to minimize the number of bills to be considered that could be seen as controversial in any way.

  2. He's secretly hoping to break the deadlock, hoping that this will drive Tom Duane toward helping the Republicans.

Your thoughts?

Update: Apparently the Governor does intend a vote on this, sometime.

Or... (4.00 / 2)
3.  He's planning to call another special session in the fall on this issue alone, or along with one or two other issues that he's leaving off the list for now.

I hope that's the case; this bill absolutely should not wait until next year.  Frankly, it shouldn't have to wait another three months.

Third Reason (4.00 / 1)
He's doing absolutely everything he can to destroy any chance he may have had to get elected.

It seems every time he inserts himself into something other than a staffer he makes things worse.  Not that the whole staffer deal works all that well for him anyway.

It's back on again ... I think (0.00 / 0)
According to the NY Times, Paterson said that "he would make sure that the State Senate votes on same sex-marriage legislation before it breaks for the summer."

We can only hope.

He's heard from constituents, and now Duane smartly says (0.00 / 0)
that there is a "zero" chance of his becoming part of a Republican-led majority. I would discount number 2. Although you never know, Paterson doesn't show much of a gift for politics.

And I would just like to point out that for a number of gays in Duane's district, repeal of vacancy decontrol was a higher priority than passage of marriage equality legislation.

The problem with repealing vacancy decontrol (0.00 / 0)
is that we know who butters Pedro's bread -- the same folks who butter Bruno's Skelos' bread too.

Don't kid yourself, those same folks were buttering Dems' bread too (0.00 / 0)
In addition to Housing Committee anti-tenant chair Espada, in late May Tenants Groups had to target voters in the districts of Craig Johnson, Carl Kruger  and Jeff Klein (the Senate deputy majority leader) because of their squishiness on rent reform. We know Finance Committee chair Kruger's in the pocket of real estate, but particularly galling was Johnson, who got big support from unions and NYC tenants to win office.

It could have been done. There are GOPers  downstate (like Frank Padavan, a vacancy decontrol repeal co-sponsor I believe) with big voting blocs of renters who would likely have been allowed to vote yes on rent reform because they would have been toast otherwise. It would have been close, but it could have been done.
