Getting Started at the Albany Project

I need to take a (political) bath

Watching the Senate Democrats' press conference has been a painful experience. Welcoming back Espada was never going to be pleasant, but watching the smoothing over and repeating previously unfulfilled promises is excruciating.

It's still possible that something good will come out of this - maybe the Democrats will actually pass genuine reform instead of just talking about it, or maybe voters will finally have had enough and take it out on their legislators and party structures instead of thinking it's everyone else who's corrupt.

Is there anyone here who's actually happy about the state of our reconciled Senate? (I'm sure it's possible.)

There's still time for the Senate to redeem itself, but this chaos and even its resolution gives them quite a mountain to climb.

Update: The Brennan Center has a piece on what might happen for rules reform.

And update: I hope Amherst Guy will still visit New York for our sakes if this story about Steve Pigeon becoming a Senate staffer ("the majority leader's general counsel") is true.

What does this actually mean?

Espada is majority leader?

Can we use this quorum just long enough to restructure the Senate, dissolve it, then get fix it?

I'm not optimistic on good coming from it. They had five months before things went loopy and didn't make good use of it.

It's time to really restructure our State government.

I give Patterson credit for at least trying to push things forward.

This, on the other hand, looks a lot like a huge step backwards.

I can't wait to hear the Republicans (4.00 / 1)
attack Espanda and Monserrat.  Whoever has these guys on their team, wins and loses.  I'm takin' a shower!

Yeah, I once read that when you're inside a black hole, time stretches out to infinity.

well, it was kind of a theological comment (0.00 / 0)
but if you'd rather go astronomical, that's fine too, under the circumstances.

Maybe some rules reform will come out of this, maybe not. (4.00 / 2)
But Espada (and his top adviser, lobbyist/real estate lawyer Stanley Schlein) will have gotten guarantees that vacancy decontrol remains dead in the water.

Even the good news about this (4.00 / 3)
essentially sucks.

He's worked in the State Senate before... (0.00 / 0)
He'll do it again.

Simonstl, It's so nice here in Ohio. There's tons of stuff we dont have in NY, like Sonic Drive-Ins, Waffle Houses, Steak and Shake's, the Victoria's Secret, Express, Limited, and Abercrombie headquarters (and all the gorgeous employees that go along with), and a big time college football team (sorry Syracuse, you don't count anymore).

But the best part is, there isn't Pigeon shit everywhere like there is in NY.

It's almost as bad (0.00 / 0)
Golisano has bought himself a substantial amount of political influence with Steve Pidgeon now tailing the State Senate Majority Leader.

Pedro Espada as the Majority Leader is a travesty, but Pidgeon pulling his strings shows me that the coup has succeeded after all.
