Is Carolyn Maloney Still Running for Senate?

by: BingChester

I have mixed feelings about the primary challenge to Senator Gillibrand by Rep. Carolyn Maloney.  Both are solid politicians with left of center credential on some issues and more moderate credentials on others.  And while I respect the right of anyone to run in a primary (no matter how futile that campaign may be), there's no doubt that resources would be wasted on a divisive primary in New York.

So it's interesting to hear the reports today that Maloney may be re-considering her Senate bid.  At the very least, something is delaying her announcement.

Here's the story from the NY Post:

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney said she won't unveil a primary challenge to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand today or tomorrow -- nixing the timeframe her campaign spokesman had laid out last week.

Maloney adviser Paul Blank had said in published reports that the Silk Stocking District congresswoman would make her formal announcement "Monday or Tuesday" about a challenge to Gillibrand, a one-term upstate congresswoman who was tapped for the vacant senate seat by Gov. Paterson in January.

But asked by The Post yesterday outside a Diamond District Business Improvement District meeting if that timetable is still in effect, she said, "No, it is not."

"This is (an) official government meeting" she was attending, she said. "We'll get back to you on politics in a separate way."

With speculation continuing to mount about whether Maloney will jump in the race - in the face of resistance from most New York Democratic leaders and the White House _ she today declined to say if she would announce this week, saying, "This week we are confronting health care (reform)."

Maloney supporters are strongly encouraging her to run against Gillibrand, who is trying to re-establish herself after a rocky first few months - and who public polls show is little known and potentially vulnerable to a primary challenge.

But some New York political insiders - including Gillibrand detractors - have questioned whether Maloney will pull the trigger, noting she's put off her announcement at least once before.

As little as I like trusting the NY Post on anything... (4.00 / 2)
This wouldn't surprise me in the least. Maloney's campaign has been, as the West Wing would put it, the gang that can't shoot straight, long before they ever even announced the fight. Between hurting themselves with the base on healthcare, the bad sentiment a lot of negative attacks, and Joe Trippi & his people being caught astroturfing on her behalf, she's had a hell of a rough month.

Between the trouble just getting off the ground, and the very real looming fact of losing her House seat if she ran, it wouldn't be a happy picture.

why not have 62 democrats run? (0.00 / 0)
one from each county and let the voters choose.

I still think she's in, (0.00 / 0)
since she's been campaigning against Gillibrand already for almost two months.

But I'd be happy to be proved wrong.
