Bronx will probably re-elect Sen. Espada

by: Steaming Pile

Fri Jul 31, 2009 at 12:13:46 PM EDT

Fark.com just directed my attention to an article in today's Daily News about Sen. Espada.  Seems he got a Senator Of The Year award from some group in the Bronx.  Yeah, he was put in for it before he bolted the party and held Albany hostage for a month, but the following money quote says it all:

"I would give him two awards," [79th District leader Eric Stevenson] said. "He's President of the Senate now and that's better. We get more bacon for our district."

Ay, carumba!

Steaming Pile :: Bronx will probably re-elect Sen. Espada
So the only thing that matters is how much of our tax money a legislator can haul to his or her district to waste.  That's it.  Corruption?  Hey, whatever works.  Party disloyalty?  All in the past.  Criminal activity?  What criminal activity?  Has Pedro been convicted of anything (yet)?  The only thing that matters to anyone in the Bronx, as far as anyone who matters down there is concerned, is pork, and how much they get.  That's all.

This says so many volumes about what is wrong with New York State, not just Albany, but the whole state, it makes me want to pack up and move, and I like my little square of Central New York very much.  If the actual voters re-elect this scumbag, that would destroy for all time whatever speck of faith I might have that New Yorkers are the least bit interested in people doing the right thing.

This is what our Democratic leadership enabled - that Pedro Espada is now the Senate President and gets to wield all kinds of power in the state government that he clearly does not deserve.  This guy should be given a one-way ticket Upstate (if you know what I mean), but he'll probably get to keep his job as long as the Democrats maintain a majority in the State Senate.  I'm really pissed that he gets away with dragging the New York Democratic Party's name through the mud. Locals should be pissed that the Bronx is now and forever associated with the kind of corruption once portrayed on The Sopranos, and the people of the Bronx probably don't care.  Well, I don't like it, and I doubt most of you like it either.  This ought to really, really piss you off.  I'm hopping mad right now, I can tell you that much.

UPDATE:  Really minor edits, since this made the front page, and I don't like sounding like an idiot.

We don't necessarily need to elect him (4.00 / 1)
We just need to elect progressives to other seats so that Espada is not the 32nd democrat.  Then the majority can strip him of any importance.

In other words, we need to Lieberman him.

Absolutely! (0.00 / 0)
We need a credible candidate to come forward so we can primary him.  Maybe we can set up a war chest through this and other sites.  Anyone know how to do that?  I pledge personally $1,000 right off the bat.

Meanwhile, we do indeed need to pick up a few more seats so that the scumbag will be irrelevant in any event.

Maybe (0.00 / 0)
...he can get hooked up with that corruption ring in NJ and start helping the folks in his district sell their kidneys for cash, since money is all that matters...  Really discouraging.

Long the argument for keeping Joe Bruno (4.00 / 1)
"he brings in money for Rensselaer County."

Oh really?

Then how come Rensselaer County is in such a financial mess?

How come the root cause of that financial mess, dysfunction in the state government that forces more costs and less service down to the counties, hasn't been addressed under Joe Bruno?

Modern version... how will dysfunction and corruption in state government be solved with a corrupt and dysfunctional Pedro Espada running the show?

Having the Senate Majority Leader as your Senator does not solve your problems.

Not even close.

Take it from someone who knows.

A great argument (0.00 / 0)
Let's hope whoever challenges Espada makes it.

Keep your eyes on the prize (0.00 / 0)
The real problem with the state Senate is the Republican gerrymander, which enabled a party representing less than 40% of NYs voters to maintain a lock on the Senate for decades, and put Espada in a position  to shake down the Dem leadership.

I would expect a major effort to pay Espada back, with $upport from progressives around the state for a primary challenge, as well as for defeating some more superannuated Repugs so that Pedro will lose his leverage.
