NY-Sen: New York City Media's Bias Against Senator Gillibrand Must End

by: robert.harding

Wed Aug 05, 2009 at 14:18:06 PM EDT

Ever since Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, she has faced a certain level of negative (or critical) coverage by New York City-based publications. When it became clear that Gillibrand was being appointed to fill the spot, the New York Times described her as "controversial among some of the party's more liberal leaders downstate" because of her alleged stances on certain hot-button issues. She was labeled as "inexperienced" by the New York Post, who said she big goals, but little experience.

In the six-plus months since her appointment, very little has changed from that aspect. In recent days, Jason Horowitz of the New York Observer has authored two columns (here and here) that paint Gillibrand as a political opportunist and as a puppet for the all-powerful Sen. Chuck Schumer. Liz Benjamin also played along today, using a post about Rep. Jerrold Nadler's endorsement of Manhattan DA candidate Richard Aborn to point out that Nadler has yet to endorse Gillibrand. Of course, he hasn't endorsed Rep. Carolyn Maloney either, but that's not how the point was framed.

This approach by members of the New York City media is becoming so blatant that it is really hard to take them serious, especially if this ends up being a legitimate primary with no possible candidates but an actual candidate in Rep. Maloney running against Sen. Gillibrand. They have treated Gillibrand as an outsider and even though we are all New Yorkers (as in the state), Gillibrand is not a "New Yorker" (as in the city).

I am a supporter of Gillibrand's. That I will disclose. Those who write for some of the above publications have read here in the past and will continue to read in the future. My message to them isn't that they kiss Gillibrand's feet and paint some fake picture of her. All I am asking for is balance. There needs to be a level of equality in their reporting. The continued "criticize Gillibrand" approach is getting tired. It is one thing to criticize an elected official where criticism is necessary. But it's another to pile on just because you don't know too much about them other than they aren't from your city.

Again, I'm not looking for special treatment. All I am looking for is a level of fairness and balance. There have been certain opinions of Gillibrand that aren't necessarily written, but are shown in the writing approach of these reporters. Sen. Schumer has been the beneficiary of plenty of positive media coverage from New York City publications in the past, but they have also critiqued him just the same. That same principle can be applied to Gillibrand, but we have yet to reach that point.

Is it the New York City media being disappointed that it was Gillibrand and not media darling Caroline Kennedy that was appointed to the seat? Possibly. And since Kennedy received just as much (if not more) media coverage than Gillibrand when Gillibrand's appointment was announced, it's hard to debate that point.

But that was a long time ago, at least in political terms. Caroline Kennedy is an afterthought at this point. We have a possible U.S. Senate primary and we have a senator that New Yorkers are trying to get to know. It is the media's responsibility to fairly distribute the news to show New Yorkers (whether in upstate or downstate) what their senator is doing or isn't doing. So far, that isn't being done.

We deserve better from our journalists. It's time we got the full story instead of the story they want to tell us about Sen. Gillibrand.

Boo f**kin' Hoo - answer the questions, Kirsten (0.00 / 0)
The media's role in a democracy is not limited to just reporting the news, but more importantly, challenging the government and those elected officials who govern.

Kirsten Gillibrand has enjoyed a meteoric rise in politics. After just 1 term in the House, she now sits as NY's junior senator in the US Senate. That is a quick turn around, and because she is relatively unknown outside her district, New Yorkers deserve to know who she is, where she stands, etc. That job falls to the press.

As Sen. Gillibrand took office, the NY media began to examine her record. A self-declared "Blue-dog Democrat", her House record falls on the conservative side of the party: pro-gun rights, anti-immigration reform, against marriage equality and repealing "don't ask, don't tell", against the first TARP vote in late autumn 2008, and believes English should be the official language of the US, naming just a few. It all makes sense, though. She is from a conservative part of the state and shares her district's conservative values and opinions.

There are many like-minded Democrats both in and out of the US Senate, but they do not have the same problem as Sen. Gillibrand; not a biased press, but rather the reputation of flip-flopping at best - being seen as an opportunist at worst.

Now that she is a Senator, Gillibrand is for more gun control, for the repeal of DOMA and "don't ask, don't tell". She now favors a path to citizenship for illiegal immigrants and has signed on to the administrations bail-out bills. Maybe she has seen the light? But that is an awful lot of light in only 6 short months. Why is the press asking questions so far off base here? The Post wants to know why she is abandoning her moderate positions and the Times is suspicious of her aparent turn around just as she needs downstate to keep her Senate seat. These are legitimate questions and they deserve to be answered.

So what gives? Is Kirsten Gillibrand a blue-dog, a lefty, or is she in it only for herself? I think the press is correct to hold her feet to the fire, if only to get to the truth of who Kirsten Gillibrand truly is. If her supporters don't like it, they have no one to blame but her.

You haven't spent much time on this site, because the distortions of Gillibrand's record, and the exaggerated media talking points you are repeating (exactly the point of Robert's post) have been discussed and refuted in detail. Maybe you are so "furious" because you do not have actual facts.

Curious is more like it (0.00 / 0)
I looked up the Senator's Congressional record and she has taken "Blue Dog" positions during her time in the House. Her own words have shown her drift to the left now that she is Senator. What facts am I missing?

You might want to get some facts, because right now you're making yourself look like a fool. (4.00 / 1)
No offense, but your statements don't in any way reflect reality.

A fool? really? (0.00 / 0)
Gillibrand's record and positions as a Rep are on the record. Her change of heart is also on the record. They are not consistent. What reality do you speak of?

Tax the Church.

I am not sure where you got your information on (4.00 / 3)
Gillibrand, but you are repeating talking points that do not reflect her actual voting record.

Do yourself a favor and do your own research before presenting opinion based on talking points and not facts.

What a long, strange trip it's been.

They forget... (4.00 / 3)
Too often people in NY media (and, heck, NY government) forget that half the people in the state don't live in NYC. If nothing else (and I do think highly of Chuck), it sure is nice to have a Senator from the other half of the state.

Excellent Point... (4.00 / 3)
Whether or not you like/support Kirsten, you have to acknowledge the NYC media has it out for her.  The Times' coverage in particular has been breathtaking.

In two consecutive pieces on her, they wrote about how the Senator had a "rocky start" or something to that effect.  How?  There are questions of political support back home just as there are with every senator, but how has her Senate tenure been rocky or anything like it?  Did she crawl under her Senate desk and start sobbing?  Whack John Cornyn with her purse?

Then, when she spoke at the Sotomayor hearings, the NYT rushed a story up to their website about how it was so embarrassing and she had to shorten a five minute speech.  Though, when you think about it, that really is hard breaking news.  Senators spend hours upon hours yammering about what they intend to ask a nominee, but when a guest of the nominee speaks for 6 minutes rather than 5, the gavel comes down.  I'm sure the NYT newsroom came to a screeching halt and poor Carolyn Maloney was left clutching her ever-present pearl necklace.

Gillibrand hasn't misspoken or voted wrong since she entered the Senate.  She's not giving them anything substantive, so they have to use gossip and tone.  They wanted Caroline.  Sulzberger wanted Caroline.  That's what this is about.

Har to read a hard bias into that (4.00 / 1)
She is less experienced and to the right of Maloney. She'll admit both of those things I think.

(The puppet of Schumer point is laughable, because a) its demonstrateable that its not true, and b) because if it were true, it would make her a kick-ass Senator, as 71% of New Yorkers think that Schumer is one.)

Kirsten Gillibrand will be retained in fall 2010 because she's a good Senator. People are better at cutting through the crap sometimes than we give them credit for.

Largely agreed, but... (4.00 / 2)
Yes, the NYT coverage has been pretty pathetic.  I think some of the editors there really had their heart set on Caroline Kennedy (the glam, "big name" Manhattan candidate), and are bitter that she wasn't picked.

The NY Post should come as no surprise; they'd hate anyone that Paterson picked.

I wouldn't impugn Liz Benjamin, though.  She's really an ace, first-rate reporter.  And I'd hardly consider her a "downstate" journalist, anyway (she grew up in New Paltz, I believe, and spent much of her career at the TU).

And it's not as if upstate media has been flawless either.  The worst is Alan Chartock.  His commentaries and editorials on Gillibrand in the last 6 months have truly been insufferable, though perhaps not surprising given that he has never liked Gillibrand (and even supported Sweeney over her in '06).  The irony, of course, is that Chartock is not even a NYS resident.

I beg to differ regarding Benjamin (4.00 / 1)
I have been regularly reading her pieces, and every single piece that even mentions Gillibrand has an obvious negative spin or frame, if not outright bias.

More kudos for Gillibrand (0.00 / 0)
Whether you support Gillibrand or not, you have to acknowledge that the Democratic Party apparatchiks are doing all they can to preclude progressives from having an opportunity to vote against her in the primary.  I would love a chance.

As a matter of fact, I have -- and many others -- have examined her record closely, and have not just teased out those portions of her record that provide the illusion that she is a progressive.

"Tax The Church" is quite accurate in his description of her voting record as being conservative "blue dog democrat." Not surprisingly, because she was a card-carrying member of that obstructionist faction when she was in the House.

The one point I would take issue with TTC on is that I don't think Gillibrand is either conservative or progressive, she is a rank opportunist, and is more than willing to take public positions that that don't reflect her voting record.

I was particularly appalled by her trotting around the 20th Congressional District pantomiming her concern about the epidimic of obesity among children.

This is stunning hypocrisy coming from a member of Congress who not only voted for the Farm Bill, which provides subsidies for the production of high fructose corn syrup, a deadly additive directly linked to the rise of obesity and diabetes in this country, but she voted to override Bush's veto of the Farm Bill, manifestly welfare for big agribusiness.

Perhaps, though, I shouldn't be surprised of behavior like this from Gillibrand, a former lawyer for big tobacco, which lied to the public for decades about the dangers of cigarette smoking.

Meantime -- coming under the rubric of "more kudos for Gillibrand" -- new research suggests that the sweetener could be tainted with mercury, putting millions of children at risk for developmental problems.

I see we have another (4.00 / 1)
selective with the "facts" Gillibrand basher. Her voting record is solidly progressive. She opposed the war in Iraq, is a staunch advocate of women's rights, pay equity and choice; gay rights; stem cell research; increasing the minimum wage; and expanding affordable housing, Head Start and SCHIP. She has been endorsed by numerous progressive democratic issue-groups, including the ACLU, the League of Conservation Voters, EMILY'S List, NARAL, the Sierra Club, and the AFL- CIO.

Lastly, minimizing the Farm Bill to be some kind of blatant contradiction regarding the fight against obesity because there are subsidies for corn syrup (as if that is the central focus of the bill) is absurd.

Robert, I see you are addressing (4.00 / 2)
the downstate media, so I understand the tone of this post, but I think you are being far too gentle and diplomatic. The relentless negativity and bias has been evident from the start, when they were obviously furious that anyone Upstate would be chosen over Caroline. They have latched onto every exaggeration of Gillibrand's record and hammered away at the same few talking points for months, hoping to sabotage her career. We've seen how easily people are manipulated by talking points, because they get repeated here verbatim regularly. Fortunately, Kirsten continues to travel the State and introduce legislation, so people are beginning to learn more about her directly.

Whaaaa? (4.00 / 1)
The relentless negativity and bias has been evident from the start, when they were obviously furious that anyone Upstate would be chosen over Caroline.

I live in NYC, and I didn't see the "downstate" press pushing Caroline Kennedy. Indeed, I recall some articles questioning her qualifications. Care to cite some articles to support your assertion?

Nor did I see the press really taking sides among any of the contenders. Certainly the NY Times, which I read pretty carefully, did not.

I was critical of the lengthy Times piece on Gillibrand which ran, what, about two months ago? Much of it was on her tobacco company legal representation. But lawyers do what they're hired to do, so I thought criticism on that ground was unfair.

I think it's hard to separate bias from a journalist's traditional role which is to be questioning and perhaps even oppositional to those in power (there has been precious little of that over the past 10 years or so). It's entirely possible if not probable that any appointee would have been subjected to similar scrutiny. But since we can't actually do a historical counterfactual to find out, we'll never really know.

Gillibrand & downstate media (4.00 / 1)
The New York downstate media is undeniably biased against Gillibrand, led by the New York Times which gives "cover" to the rest of the broadsheets.  I used to fret that newspapers were going out of business.  Now I think it can't be too soon.  They no longer serve democracy.  They no longer seek the truth.  Goodbye and good riddance.  Don't let the door hit your rear end on the way out!
