NY-20: Tedisco wants a rematch

by: devtob

Thu Aug 27, 2009 at 14:27:03 PM EDT

After his special-election loss to Scott Murphy in April, Jim Tedisco sulked for a while and was unusually quiet.

But, with his finger to the teabag wind, Tedisco's been getting back in the media lately, opposing a $200-per-child state grant to welfare families for back-to-school expenses (paid for with stimulus funds and a grant from a George Soros foundation), and proposing a state constitutional amendment to allow recall elections for state elected officials.

And today, Tedisco told Maury Thompson of the Glens Falls Post-Star that he has been "meeting with county GOP chairmen in the 20th District to discuss a possible rematch next year."

Details, below.

devtob :: NY-20: Tedisco wants a rematch
Tedisco was given up for poilitically dead after he lost a race that he had been heavily favored to win until the last couple of weeks. Also, after the election but before the result was certain, Tedisco gave up his post as Assembly Minority Leader

But, with the media in love with teabaggers and Obama's popularity waning, he smells an opportunity, since he already has the "angry white man" bit down pat.

Here's what Tedisco said about his plans:

"I enjoy being a public servant and I'm looking at the atmosphere now," said Tedisco, a state Assemblyman from Glenville. "And it certainly has changed since when I ran for congressman in the short eight week election."

Tedisco said in a telephone interview that he has been meeting with the 10 county chairmen to analyze mistakes his campaign made  in the special election and to discuss how the mood of the country may be changing.

"I think I've met or talked with all of them," he said.

Tedisco said he does not have any set timeframe to make a decision about the November 2010 election.

"As I said, we're weighing our options." he said.

The NY-20 special election was in some ways a mini-Obama referendum, back when the honeymoon was still on.

It will surely be again in 2010, like every other close House race.

We can thank Paterson for this (0.00 / 0)
If he had left Gillibrand in NY-20 where she belongs, we would have never had to worry about that seat.  Do you think Tedisco would have run against Gillibrand?  We are already facing an uphill battle to hold a lot of our House seats and now this is just another bucket of cold water on us.

"Thank Paterson" comment unhelpful (4.00 / 1)
The flaw in your reasoning is that, fortunately, the Democratic County Chairs found in Scott Murphy a man who turned out to be one of the most talented political leaders in the nation.   If Tedisco is foolish enough to run again, Murphy will kick his ass.  Count on it.

Murphy ran severely uphill, and won. (4.00 / 1)
Chances are that after 18 months of him being their congressman, the voters are going to be substantially more comfortable with him and give him a much larger margin of victory than before. That's how it worked for Gillibrand.

Three reasons this wouldn't work (4.00 / 2)
1. As an incumbent, Scott Murphy will already have a name-recognition advantage he didn't before.

2. Tedisco lost during a special election, where voter turnout for Democrats is typically lower than it is for general elections. Murphy could probably get at least a percentage point or two boost just by running in November.

3. During his campaign, Tedisco couldn't or wouldn't take stand on one of the most important pieces of legislation so far this year, the stimulus package. After he finally made a stand, it went against the best interests of his district and the State, which is already benefitting from the stimulus package.

Tedisco II = EPIC FAIL

It will be another fight (4.00 / 1)
Tedisco only came close to winning by having a 4,000K vote margin in Saratoga County which he represents as Assemblyman - and he's likely to have that margin again.  I agree, however, that Murphy has a good political sense.  He's also doing a good job on constituent service, I can attest to from personal experience.

In NY-21, even though Paul Tonko is a freshman, the district is pretty liberal.  I think we could recruit progressives in NY-21 help us with our NY-20 campaign.

Tonko's district was gerrymandered to have all the pro-Democrat cities in the area.  So, there are a number of NY-21 activists in Troy who can easily do campaigning for Murphy.  (Rennselaer county is notoriously Republican.)

So, even though Murphy has the power of incumbency, and can possibly ride on Gillibrand's coat tails (she will be running for Senator in 2010) we shouldn't be complacent.

Tedisco is a formidable opponent, so we can't take Murphy's win for granted.  But this is definitely a contest we need to be very active in.

Whatever happens here, can we just get him the !@#$ out of the Assembly, too? (4.00 / 1)

In The Immortal Words of GWB, (4.00 / 1)
Bring it on.  Scott is great and he is growing in office.  Not complacency, it's confidence.

It's The Economy, Stupid (4.00 / 1)
Time to bring back the Clinton 1992 refrain.

If the economy is on the upswing, notably in job creation, I think Murphy is likely to do OK. He's a terrific candidate.

But if the economy is in the tank, all Democrats in swing districts will be looking at very, very tough races. It won't matter if they're responsible for the situation or not. It may not even matter much who their opponents are. Not fair, but that's how things work.
