The persistence of teabaggery

by: devtob

Sun Sep 13, 2009 at 09:43:25 AM EDT

The anti-government "Tea Party Patriot" movement had its big day in D.C. yesterday, with some tens of thousands convening in front of the Capitol to hear a bunch of Republican propaganda and preen for the cameras.

There have been more than a few diaries about that; this one will look to the future, with a focus on what the teabaggers are up to in upstate New York, near Albany.

The local teabaggers are active and persistent, with two more events planned this month, and another in November that will tie into a national "Tea Party"/Republican effort to win back control of Congress next year.

They are an easily mocked right-fringe micro-minority, more Ron Paul than John McCain, but they are organized, and they do turn out whenever there's a chance of media coverage.

Details, below.

devtob :: The persistence of teabaggery

First, here's an example of persistence -- a guy with a weird costume and weirder sign who was at the Tea Party Express event in Albany this week, and also at the D.C. event (I saw a photo of him there, really).

My guess is that he was as popular in D.C. as he was in Albany -- a veritable magnet for cameras and angry anti-Obama types.

Now, a little history.

Local teabaggers got started on April 15, with an event in Albany that, according to the local media, attracted 2,000 or so (I did not attend).

They haven't got that many out since, but they have been a regular presence at Scott Murphy's (NY-20) meet-and-greets (diaries about two of those here and here) and Paul Tonko's (NY-21) big town hall.

They also hosted, at our photogenic state Capitol, a statewide gathering of teabaggers and a visit Thursday by the nationwide Tea Party Express road show.

Despite lots of free advertising on local talk radio, the local teabaggers only mustered two buses (less than 100 people) from here for yesterday's D.C. thing.

But they have alerted their e-mail list to an "audit the Fed" event Tuesday, targeting the Albany offices of Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

And they have planned a 10-hour "Great Awakening" event in Troy on Sept. 26, that, according to the flier passed out at the Tea Party Express event, will deal with issues like treason, tyranny, socialized health care, inflation, war, income tax, and "the lies."

There is nothing on the locals' main website yet about this, but I'll bet my house they'll be organizing an event for Nov. 2, when national Tea Party types, and their Republican allies, are planning a "Countdown to Judgment Day."

National Tea Party leader Amy Kremer (part of the Tea Party Express show) preached to the choirs in Albany and D.C. that:

going forward, we have another Tea Party in November.

You know, Nov. 2, 2010, is Election Day. This year, Monday, Nov. 2, why don't we have another nationwide round of Tea Parties and call it "Countdown to Judgment Day."

That'll be their official notice.

Good luck with a Monday rally around here, in November.

Interestingly, "Southern Belle" Kremer said she traced her initial activating moment to when "Rick Santelli had his rant."

Which, like the Tea Party movement, got a lot of unwarranted media attention.

The largely he-said/she-said coverage of the teabaggers has given them a level of media credibility that the same people -- mostly Ron Paul government-haters -- did not get in last year's Republican presidential primary.

No matter how many people did the 9/12 event, and how far-right they are, there is no denying the persistence of teabaggery.

They have activated many people to come to rallies and town halls, and they have been inspired by that and are working to keep those people activated with more events in the future.

Here's what one local organizer wrote today at the Albany Tea Party message board:

This is still just the beginning. Look how far we've come in six months. We are going to be impossible to ignore by election time.

The fact that I couldn't be there has energized me.  Nothing is going to keep me from this stuff from now on -- too important.

The teabaggers will be working 24/7 to elect Republicans next year.

Those of us committed to electing and re-electing Democrats should be forewarned about that, and committed to working harder than ever next year.

Great Awakening... (4.00 / 1)
I plan on being there for the music.  My former band (Black Mountain Symphony, still the best band in the region) is playing.  I was hoping it wasn't for THIS cause.

They're lucky I quit...I'd have never signed up for that BS.  But a gig is a gig, and we can all be lovers of good music regardless of political affilitation (or imagination, as the case may be...)

Be assured that the band members certainly don't support the teabaggers cause.  If you happen to be in the audience, know that the song sure to most please the crowd entitled "We The People" was written last year and the pre-chorus line "Four more years of this shit and I promise you we're not going to be around" refers to the 2008 potential of four more years of Bush/McCain shit.  That'll probably go right over their heads :-)

Maybe instead of throwing another tea party... (4.00 / 1)
...they should actually show up at the polling places and vote.  Oh, I'm sorry.  That would be an actually constructive activity, and they won't have any of that.

Same roots as Obama '08. (0.00 / 0)
I think that this thing has the same roots as Obama '08: a desire for positive change.  The interesting thing is a Tee shirt I saw a woman wearing the other day, which said, "Impeach Everyone."

There is a sense of the positive and the nihilistic in today's politics.

Happy to see these people (0.00 / 0)
While I don't agree with most of the ideals of the Tea Bagging people I am happy to see them out there using their rights and being part of the political process.

Oh yeah, me too... (4.00 / 2)
I'm happy to see them "using their rights" to display a swastika - a hate-filled symbol if there ever was one - while protesting the President of the United States. I'm happy to see them "using their rights" to carry signs that say "Bury Obamacare with Kennedy."

I remember as a young student learning the following about freedom of speech and expression: Don't yell fire in a crowded theater.

I don't see them using their rights. I see them becoming very threatening in their tone and not revolting against government, but singling out the President of the United States because he is black and not like them (both in appearance and ideology).

Yup. (4.00 / 1)
I don't always agree with Maureen Dowd, but I think she hit the nail with a sledgehammer when she said that this is about race. "I want my country back" is, for these people, code for "I want a white president."

Would they hold the same rally at their place of business (0.00 / 0)
Robert and Adama, you are both right.
Recently, someone associated with a popular local restaurant, wrote that he found nothing wrong with the signs.  In fact he supported them.
I sent an email asking to be removed from their mailing list and that I would no longer patronize the restaurant or recommend it to friends - something I did quite often.
His reply, in part, "On a personal note, I do struggle every time I post ...- there's always a chance that I will offend someone who has a different point of view than mine.  Also, while I do I have my views, they are not necessarily the views of Nancy (our owner), or the staff.  My hope is, that while you can't recommend our restaurant, you won't hurt the reputation of the (restaurant) for my points of view."
I am curious if he would organize a teabagger rally in the parking lot of that restaurant.  If he is so sure that his point of view, on the signs and demeanor of those who show up at those rallys, is not offensive then he shouldn't have a problem having them demonstrate there.

Typical Response (0.00 / 0)
This is exactly what I expected from you. You don't agree with them so you pick out the bad and use that as a reference. Obviously since there has been mass arrests at these events they must be doing something illegal? Right? Right?

Got a news flash for ya, there are wackos in every group....including here.

Like I said I don't agree with them but they certain have the right to their opinion no matter if I like it or not, but I guess I am one of the few that actual believe in free speech even if what is said make me sick.

Besides,... (0.00 / 0)
...most people are similarly sickened by this spectacle.  Give them some more rope, and they'll surely hang themselves with it.  You wait.

I think the operating theory behind the teabag movement is that if they crank it up to 11, and get every last sympathizer out to vote on Election Day, they can take back Congress in '10.  I don't think there are enough nutjobs out there to offset the more moderate people they're alienating, but I could be wrong.  I hope not.

If I'm right about this, you'll see this movement die a horrible death in about fourteen months.

Here's What Gets My Goat: (4.00 / 1)
Yes, these people are excercising their rights.  Yes, they are all Americans too.

My problem is the freaking double standard.  You see, talk radio right now is glorifying these guys for doing the exact same thing that our side does when we want to excersice that same right as Americans, too.

But what do we hear said about us if we decide to organize a march against the war or in support of single-payer?  We hear crap like "Don't these people have jobs," or "There go the lefties again," or "These people just hate America!"  You don't hear anything that commends us on the same principles these guys are nabbing their attention with -- their use of freedom of assembly.

Where was our praise for excercising free speech when we protested the invasion of Iraq?  The suppressing of votes in Florida and Ohio?  I rest my case.

To hell with this "happy to see people using their rights" crap.  We never saw any such praise.  These were the people who would shrug of George Bush's "free speech zones," guys.  They deserve no praise for doing what they've been condemning us for since the beginning.
