Dem mayor hosts Tea Party "takeover"

by: devtob

Wed Sep 16, 2009 at 13:14:11 PM EDT

It's pretty obvious that the anti-government "Tea Party Patriot" movement is anti-Obama and all other Democrats.

Its recent event in D.C. was organized by a Republican astroturf group and featured several prominent Republican politicians as speakers. Nary a good word about any Democrat was heard from the stage, or from the crowd.

And the teabaggers have been rudely disrupting town hall meetings held by Democrats, and showing up as a cheering section for town hall meetings held by anti-Obama Republicans.

And yet, the Democratic mayor of Green Island (a small village just north of Albany, NY) will be hosting a Tea Party/wingnut radio event this Saturday.

Dissonant details, below.

devtob :: Dem mayor hosts Tea Party "takeover"
The event, "The Recall Revolution -- The Taking of Green Island," is a co-production of Steve and Jackie, morning hosts at WROW-AM, and the local teabaggers.

And there will a "takeover" of sorts; Green Island Mayor Ellen McNulty-Ryan will turn over the key to the village to the radio rabble-rousers for the duration of the three-hour program.

The speakers will include Republican Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, who will promote his proposal for recall of state officials as part of his campaign to try again in NY-20 (which he still does not live in, and does not include Green Island).

The only other recognizable speaker is Wade Abbott, main organizer of the various Tea Party events around here since April.

The other speakers are teabaggers who are also regular callers to Steve and Jackie.

The speakers will share one thing in common -- they will all diss Democrats in Washington and Albany, and encourage listeners to throw the Democratic bums out.

If this event is like others recently around here, they will be preaching to a choir of Obama-haters, some of them carrying signs dissing Democrats as socialists, Marxists, commies and Nazis.

McNulty-Ryan really should know better -- her brother Mike represented NY-21 for 20 years in Congress, and before that served in the state Assembly and as mayor of Green Island. And her family has been influential in Albany County Democratic politics for more than 40 years.

She was on Steve and Jackie's show this morning to promote the event, and said she is participating because she was assured that this Tea Party would be respectful, and presumably not attended by this guy who showed up at the Albany Tea Party Express show.

McNulty-Ryan explained that the entire village board (all Democrats) had appproved the event based on a "promise that this would be respectful, and nothing would get out of hand. ... If this turns out to be anything other that that, you have done exactly the same thing that you're upset with (government) officials for doing."

Whatever, on the off chance that this event is "respectful," it will still be essentially a Republican-base rally, aided and abetted by a Democratic mayor.

After McNulty-Ryan, Steve and Jackie went back to bashing Democrats -- more than an hour of trashing Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (who Mike McNulty mentored in the House) for her ACORN funding vote.

Followed by more of that on Glenn Beck's radio show.

Let me be clear, I have no problem with teabaggers getting permits for their rallies.

I do have a problem with McNulty-Ryan's active participation, on stage, in yet another anti-Obama, anti-Democrats rally.

She should, too.

The Albany-area teabaggers (4.00 / 1)
are mostly Ron Paul types, the right wing of the right wing.

McNulty-Ryan should know that, and stay away on Saturday.

What in the world (4.00 / 2)
are the McNulty's thinking?

They are thinking of themselves (4.00 / 1)
Dynastic career politicians think of nothing else.

This isn't new in McNulty-land.  Back in 1995, Mikey supported the Contract With America more than any other Dem in the Northeast.  Why do you think I was so happy to see him go last year?

They're simply making a calcualtion that it will be easier to maintain their power if they support what they (wrongly) see as the new big movement.

The McNulty's have been a machine name in Albany County politics for some time.  Daddy Jack McNulty was County Sherriff from 1973-1979 while the Corning-O'Connel Machine was still in it's heyday.  That should tell you something.  He's still regarded as the "dean" of the County Party today.  That should tell you more.  And the former Congressman was stumping for deadbeat Albany Mayor Jennings these past couple months as well.

That should tell you everything.

Great post, devtob (4.00 / 1)
Just to clarify, though, some numbers were mixed up.  Tedisco wants to try again in NY-20 and McNulty represented NY-21.  The Town & Village of Green Island is in NY-21 and so is Tedisco, who thankfully is not a municipality himself.

Niggling details, I know.  You're paying far more attention than most people, that's for sure!

Some fun facts, too:  Green Island is the smallest township in the state where land area is concerned.  It also is not an island.  It is also one of only five municipalities that are incorporated as both a Town and a Village.  This is the reason just about every McNulty that served as Mayor of Green Island also got to serve as Green Island Town Supervisor.

In that sense, the anti-big-government teabaggers have chosen a rather ironic location for their little tea party :-)

Keep up the good work!

NY-20/21 problem fixed (0.00 / 0)
Thanks.

Another fun fact about Green Island that should drive the teabaggers crazy -- it has a municipal electric utility, with rates much lower than the rest of us around here pay.

I wonder if the teabaggers will rabble-rouse about that bit of socialism Saturday.

No, I think it is (2.00 / 2)
fair to say these people (and there are a hell of a lot of them, that march had somewhere between 70,000 [DC Police] and 1.2 million people [Aerial photo analysis by the Park Service]---probably in the low hundreds of thousands?---in attendance)don't like the Obama Administration so far and did not like the Bush Administration.

They want a smaller, less intrusive federal government, more market freedom and, frankly, less bull$#!+ and more adherence to the Constitution.

There are shades of both hope and nihilism in the Liberty Movement.  It is time to start talking to (and listening to) these people.

You're badly misinformed. (0.00 / 0)
The National Park Service has not done regular crowd estimates since 1996. They did not do a crowd estimate for the teabag rally. Anyone who told you otherwise is lying to you.

All the CREDIBLE estimates range from 30,000 (DC fire department) to 70,000. Anything above that has no independent organization standing behind it.

And no, they don't want adherence to the constitution, or they wouldn't be fantasizing that a constitutionally elected president was really an alien from Kenya. I also seriously doubt that that crowd supported the first amendment rights of the anti-war protestors, nor do I suspect they believe in the equal protection clause rights of gays, blacks, Muslims, et al.

Out of Touch (0.00 / 0)
I am a member of the so-called "tea party" crowd, and my concern is with the size and scope of the government and the rampant corruption and spending. Surely your crowd has the same concerns, or are you so blinded by ideology?? We have more in common than you think, however you are pandering to a liberal media who uses inflammatory language to continue the divisiveness that sells.  Please open your eyes and ears to what is REALLY going on since we have all been duped by both parties for decades. Believe me, I am not on the fringe and neither are most of the people flocking to the liberty movement. Unfortunately we have our fringe element but that happens on both sides.

I'm on the Liberal end of the spectrum, (0.00 / 0)
but I am very impressed with the Tea Party/Liberty Movement people I have met.  This, and the Obama '08 phenomenon, are driven by a hope for positive, lasting change.

It is time for these two groups to talk . . . and maybe elect some "honest men . . . [and women] . . . to be captains of horse" or at least state legislators and members of Congress.

A few teabaggers parachute in here (4.00 / 1)
to defend their "movement," but none of them deal with the essential fact that it is anti-Obama and anti-Democrat by design.

Teabaggers are also rudely disruptive at town hall meetings, completely deluded about the Constitution and about socialism, fascism, communism and Nazism, and obviously manipulated and coordinated by the Republican Party and its media allies.

Right now, the local teabagger leadership is planning to demonstrate against Obama's appearance Monday at Hudson Vallet Community College. One of them wondered if anyone has access to an airplane that could skywrite or tow a banner with the message "You lie."

Where, exactly, is there any common ground between such people and Democrats?
