Governor Reveals Past Fantasies; First Lady Says of Obama's Nudge "I Don't Think It's Right"

"I did not sign up for this," Paterson said. "I had this grand plan that Hillary Clinton was going to become president and maybe the governor would appoint me to the Senate."

The Syracuse Post-Standard thus quotes Governor Paterson looking back wistfully at his dreams of the past, under the headline "With His Support Evaporating, Paterson Shows His Humor in Syracuse."

And, while the Governor was up in Syracuse at the NYS Associated Press Association annual meeting, recalling his fond hopes of what might have been, the first lady was telling the NY Post that Obama should have stayed out of it all.  Here it is, as quoted in the NY Times

"I never heard of a president asking a governor not to run," Michelle Paterson told The Post after a luncheon in New York City. "I thought it was very unusual that this would be asked of David, and I don't think it's right."

The Times also has this quote from the Governor, which pretty much nails the situation:

"if I got to a point where I thought that my candidacy was hurting my party, obviously it would be rather self-absorbed to go forward."

Listen up, David.  Your wife may never think it is right, and you will probably always go back to thinking about how it might have been different.... but, if that isn't the definition of self-absorbed, I don't know what might be a better one.

Hang it up.  It's time.  If you can't face doing it in a big way while speaking to the NYS Associated Press Association, announce it at our BBQ in Ithaca on Saturday among Dem friends.  And then we can all have a good laugh at some of your great jokes, and move on.

Hey, he just got his LG. The Senate might have to work... (4.00 / 2)
the dysfunction in Albany is not all Paterson's fault.  Give  the man a couple of days, now that he has some semblance of control?  Face it, the Senate Dems have dissed and thwarted his every move. It's going to be a long, cold, lonely winter.  Let's defer judgment until the solstice.

Really? (4.00 / 1)
This is where we're at in NYS?  Paterson is now admitting his blatant political power-play in 2006 that everyone assumed anyway?  Sheesh.

well (4.00 / 1)
You can't call him a phony, can ya.

Hm. (4.00 / 1)
Well, latest word up here is that he has sent a message that he will NOT be attending our "Meet the Candidates" BBQ this weekend.  So, maybe he won't be a candidate.

MTP (4.00 / 1)
I see that Patterson will be on MTP this Sunday.  I guess the prep time he will need for that nixed the BBQ.

It's not as if (4.00 / 1)
any vacuum of power here looks to be filled any time soon by anyone.

New York is a complete political void.  This used to be amusing, but now just puts me in a spiritual frame of mind, the kind you get to via meditating on Nothing.

nature abhors a vacuum (0.00 / 0)
but somehow our institutional structures, while empty, are still strong enough to keep that vacuum intact.

Hard to figure, really.  Meditation does seem like the right approach...

NY's administrative structures (0.00 / 0)
will probably last longer than its power-elite structures will.  Of course, there will be a lot of petty graft involved, but doesn't that happen already with the town justice system and the authorities?

We're already post-Soviet, in a way.  Or post-Rome.  Or post-Empire State.

[ Parent ]
What we need is.... (0.00 / 0)
...to put the responsibility for the NYS "shi* of state" in a bag, take it to a busy Manhattan corner, and ask some befuddled looking stranger to "here, hold this for me, ok?" and then melt into the crowd....
