NY-29: Massa's Cryptic E-Mail: Is He Considering Not Running In 2010?

by: robert.harding

Wed Oct 07, 2009 at 14:02:47 PM EDT

I didn't think we would have to worry about Congressman Eric Massa running in 2010. But an e-mail blast he sent out today, which could be nothing more than the announcement of his re-election bid, raises some questions.

Here is the e-mail:

Friends,

As the leaves begin to turn all across Western New York and the conclusion of my first year in Congress draws near, I have never been more proud to serve as your Representative. Every day of my incumbency has brought about new challenges and new reasons to move forward, and I truly feel blessed to have the honor of fighting for you in the United States House of Representatives. This privilege has allowed me to hold 60 townhall meetings all over the 29th Congressional District and fight for the values that we care the most about.

The Founding Fathers designed the House of Representative as the People's House, and as such the citizens of this great Nation have the duty to elect their member of Congress every two years. While people sometimes get sick of campaigns, this cycle of frequent elections gives the people the best and most immediate tool possible to hold their member of Congress accountable and make their voices heard.

Accountability is a value that I hold near and dear, and it is with this spirit of service that I write you today.

On Saturday, 10/10 at 10:00 am, I will be making a formal announcement about the 2010 election. I would like to invite all of you, friends of old and new, to join me at Centerway Square in Corning NY on this morning. Below are the details of this event:

Rep. Eric Massa will make an announcement about the 2010 election

Saturday, October 10th

10:00 am

Centerway Square

Corning, NY 14830

It has been my honor and privilege to serve the families of this region and I hope to see you on Saturday in my hometown of Corning.

Also, don't forget to forward this email to your friends and family!

Thank you,

Eric Massa

To add to the speculation, Massa's office is being very coy. When I asked directly if Massa would run or not, I got a "we'll see."

At first, the e-mail itself didn't worry me. A few other friends were a little more worried than I, mainly because such "important political announcements" usually indicate that a candidate isn't running.

But then Massa's office left the door open and we have a lot of speculation.

This could amount to nothing more than Massa building up hype for 2010. I sense it could be that, but I'm not sure.

We will have to wait for Saturday in Corning.

Being coy (0.00 / 0)
Maybe he's running for Governor.

Seriously, I have a hard time believing that he would have spent more time running for office than actually being in office.  The only reason I can think of that he might not run again would be if he had a new (or recurring) health problem.

I hope like hell that that isn't the case. (0.00 / 0)
Massa is by far my favorite Congressman, and in some ways the closest thing that the NY-26th district gets to majority representation.

A Massa retirement would be very bad news (0.00 / 0)
It would mean that he doesnt think Democrats will be able to hold the majority after 2010.  There isnt a single other Democrat who could hold this seat, especially in 2010.

I don't think it would mean that. (0.00 / 0)
My first suspicion would be that if he's retiring, it means health problems.

[ Parent ]
What health problem? n/t (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
Obviously, I don't even know if there is one. (0.00 / 0)
And really I would rather not speculate.

[ Parent ]
Massa is a cancer survivor (0.00 / 0)
Massa had cancer about a decade ago, and has been very out-front about it.  I saw him during the campaign the morning after making a very long walk for cancer research with other survivors.  But, yeah, it worries me that he might have a recurrence....  hope not!

[ Parent ]
No. (0.00 / 0)
It does not mean that.

We have a 30 or 40 seat majority. It will take more than one cycle to lose that. Plus, have you seen the 2012 redistricting projections? We're picking up 10-15 seats by redistricting alone in 2012. Minimum.

That's not it.

[ Parent ]
Our majority is built on seats we cant hold long term (0.00 / 0)
One bad cycle for Democrats and the majority collapses.

[ Parent ]
Not the case, in my opinion. (4.00 / 2)
In my opinion a lot of "red" districts are ones where once a Democrat is actually elected, it's holdable because people start getting used to the fact that Democrats don't have two heads and forked tongues, and we can actually be good representatives. Take a look at the NY-20th, for instance. Gillibrand narrowly gets elected, gets reelected in a landslide, and Murphy narrowly gets elected WITHOUT the benefit of a big election cycle for Dems.

Remember, 1994 wasn't any kind of normal election, or even a bad election for us. We screwed ourselved six ways from Sunday, between the healthcare debacle, gays in the military, the Assault Weapons Ban, a dozen Congressional scandals, plus there was Gingrich and the rise of the religious right. The Republican party isn't in the same position now as they were then, and neither are we.

[ Parent ]
Its very similar (0.00 / 0)
This majority that we have right now is like a hothouse flower.  It can only survive in the most optimal conditions.  The problem is turnout.  Republicans are very energized and Democrats have no reason to go out and vote.  And Gillibrand won in 2008 over a weak opponent in a great Democratic year.  Murphy would probably lose if the election were held today.

[ Parent ]
Wait a year (0.00 / 0)
Democrats will find a reason to go out and vote.

[ Parent ]
True and false (0.00 / 0)
We picked up a number of seats on the brink, but unlike Massa, most of those seats are filled with Heath Shuler types - blue dogs.

And anyways thats only 17 seats by my count (Including Massa and Scott Murphy) Where do we lose the other 30?

Are you seriously expecting to lose people like Arcuri? Hall? Higgins? Maffei? All fit your criteria: R to D in 2004, 2006 or 2008 - are they doomed?

[ Parent ]
Im not just talking about New York (0.00 / 0)
Im talking about all over the country.  There are seats in Florida, South Carolina, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, pretty much everywhere that we could very easily lose.

[ Parent ]
Me too buddy. (0.00 / 0)
17 seats

[ Parent ]
BTW (0.00 / 0)
Who the hell in South Carolina do you think is gonna lose his seat???? John Spratt, the 26 year incumbent from a district that's never elected a Republican ever? or James Clyburn, whose district has every Black person and hippie in the state?

[ Parent ]
Spratt could get swept in a wave election (0.00 / 0)
not that 2010 is going to be one, but I can see Spratt losing.

[ Parent ]
Spratt (0.00 / 0)
Wins pretty consistently by 30-35 points

[ Parent ]
In good Democratic years (0.00 / 0)
In 1994, he won by just four points and by just nine points in 1996, over pretty weak candidates.

[ Parent ]
Right....So (0.00 / 0)
you're saying next year will be five points worse nationally than 1994? If that's the case, we're set to lose close to 100 seats - 1994 we lost most D+6 or closer seats but few D+7 or bigger seats. Ergo, you are saying that any D+11 or worse is good as gone

[ Parent ]
That sounds to me (0.00 / 0)
a WHOLE lot like a retirement announcement. Sad, and actually shocking to me.

This would be terrible and tragic (0.00 / 0)
and I hope there's no health issue here, as was suggested above.

"Never be afraid to stand with the minority when the minority is right, for the minority which is right will one day be the majority."

-William Jennings Bryan

FWIW (0.00 / 0)
The Star Gazette interpreted this completely differently.

The Star Gazette... (0.00 / 0)
Also didn't quote the e-mail correctly, as they only termed it a "political announcement." Of course, as I say in the post, it is either Massa building up hype or he really is getting out.

It's one or the other. I hope it's not the latter, but they would do something like this.

To be honest, I don't know what they are going for. It has perplexed a few of the bloggers I know who were talking about this with me earlier.

Support our troops, not the war.

[ Parent ]
Re-election (4.00 / 1)
If he was going to retire he wouldn't choose a date and time so rife with 10s.

Think about it on 10/10 at 10am are you going to announce you are retiring or running for re-election?

Sounds like he's running for a different office (0.00 / 0)
He wouldn't be drawing attention to himself like this if he were retiring, and he wouldn't be so coy if he were trying to build up for 2010.

What can he run for, though? AG?

Massa's not a lawyer, to my knowledge. (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
Whoops. (0.00 / 0)
I probably should have looked that up first.

Comptroller? Lt. Gov under Cuomo? He's becoming chair of the DCCC?
