The 23rd wasn't include for obvious reasons. That race can serve as its own post, since three candidates are vying for it and there is no incumbent.

One of the things that stuck out to me was the great quarter Eric Massa had. His district - NY-29 - is a rural district that isn't really a wealthy district. So when he can bring in over $289,000 in a quarter where most upstate representatives only brought in half of that amount, it shows that he is a strong incumbent. The Republicans are gunning for him, but he's tough.

Dan Maffei had a very strong quarter - the best of any upstate representative and fourth-best of any member of Congress in the state.

If there is one thing you can say about Rangel, he is a great fundraiser. He was second to Steve Israel in this quarter, but not by much. His expenditures were high, but he still has a lot of money in the bank (not that he needs to worry about that).

For the most part, these are solid and typical numbers. As a resident of NY-26, it is interesting to see Lee's numbers. I wouldn't read too much into his mediocre quarter, but the list of donors who have contributed to his campaign makes for a "Best of Wall Street"-type list.

WTF Tonko!??! (0.00 / 0)
Someone seems to have forgotten how many other Democrats want that seat. That's a pathetic number.

Big Ups to Higgins, Maffei and Massa for being willing to take the time to do what it takes to defend Red2Blue seats: Raise some fricking money.

Tonko... (0.00 / 0)
To me, was the least "exciting" of all the candidates that ran last year. But he got the job done and he has experience on his side. He isn't a bad representative either. He's been strong in the House.

He also is in a district where he can afford to have a fairly low amount of money. It's pretty clear in NY-21 that if you're the Democratic nominee, you are going to win.

I went to one of Tonko's town hall meetings (0.00 / 0)
during the "summer of teabagging" - he did a really good job - brought 3 constituents who'd been hurt by the current insurance system to tell their stories.

He should do ok - let's hope the other Democrats in his district who want to run take a look at the State Legislature Senate race.

Maffei is likely the safest of all of the 2006/2008 pickups (0.00 / 0)
With McMahon not too far behind.

I agree... (0.00 / 0)
Maffei's fundraising is strong. He also benefits from being in both the Rochester and Syracuse markets. He was tough for the GOP to run against in 2008. It will be very hard to do so in 2010.

[ Parent ]
The district is also pretty Democratic (0.00 / 0)
Which will always help him.

I think it's extremely interesting that Lee dropped so sharply. (0.00 / 0)
First quarter, he raised $224,000. Second quarter he raised a little more, $235,000. Third quarter it suddenly slides: $142,000. What caused him to lose so much ground? It's not like the economy got that much worse between June and September. What I'm struck with reading the itemized donations is that there seems to be fewer individuals this quarter--a much larger share of the donations are PACs and businesses.

It's also interesting when you compare it against another congressman right next door who's considered to be on the top of the other side's target list: Eric Massa. He raised $289,000, with half a million on hand, despite not having a special-interest-friendly commmittee seat like Financial Services.

By the way, I'd like to know what the hell all these people are doing that they're spending so much on their campaigns when they're not actually campaigning yet. Okay, Charlie Rangel is attempting reputation damage control, and Carolyn Maloney thought she was going to be running for Senate, but what the hell is the excuse for the rest of you? With the exception of Nydia Velazquez, Jose Serrano, and Maurice Hinchey, they all seem to be spending a vast amount of money for an off year.

And yes, if I sound a little bit peeved, it's because I am. Most of those figures represent more money spent in three months than entire regions of the Democratic political operation in this state will use in three years.

Metropolitan NY is a very expensive area (0.00 / 0)
to campaign in - TV buys are very expensive.

Yeah... (0.00 / 0)
...But who's running ads a year before the election?

For that matter, Dan Maffei isn't in the NY Metro. What's he burning $42,000 a month on? What's my rep burning $31,700 a month on?

It is on the street..... (0.00 / 0)
Someone with cash, from Albany, is gonna primary Tonko.
He will need more than $60K to keep his job in 2010..

My point exactly (0.00 / 0)
There's at least 4 other people in Albany that we know want that seat.
