Monseratte Must GO!

by: NYBri

Fri Oct 16, 2009 at 14:21:48 PM EDT

Liz Krueger, in a released statement earlier today, sledge hammered the point home:

I believe Hiram Monserrate should not remain in the Senate, and for the sake of his constituents, the institution of the Senate and the Democratic party he should resign immediately based on the seriousness of his violent crime.

Being an elected official is an honor and a privilege, not a right. As a state legislator , the voters give you the power to decide what laws all 19 million of us live under. And as such we are obligated to hold ourselves to the highest standards of our laws.

To help her deliver that point, a group of concerned New Yorkers will soon be setting up a petition demanding that Senator Monserrate either resign or be expelled from the Senate. The petition will be delivered to Senator Monseratte and the Senate Leadership...both the Majority and Minority.

This action transcends party affiliation and ideology.

Keep an eye out here and elsewhere online for the url and the petition.

It will be step one in a concerted effort on the part of the people of New York to send a clear message to those who are in the Senate that we have had enough incompetence, corruption and dysfunction...and are willing to act decisively in all areas of the state to find and support representatives who are more interested in serving the public interest than power grabs and lining their own pockets.

November 2010. There is so much for us all to remember and so many who deserve to be in those memories.

STATEMENT FROM SENATOR VALESKY REGARDING THE CONVICTION OF HIRAM MONSERRATE

Like all New Yorkers, I have followed the developments in the domestic violence abuse case against Hiram Monserrate and been disgusted by what I have seen and heard.  Domestic violence is a serious matter and a violent crime that cannot be ignored or dismissed.

The criminal justice system has now weighed these deplorable acts and determined a verdict of guilt.   Now it is time for the State Senate to take appropriate disciplinary actions against this member of our chamber.

It is my hope that Mr. Monserrate will do the right thing for this body and for the people of this state and resign his post immediately.   If he chooses not to do so, I will work with other members of the Senate to seek his removal.   We are currently reviewing the internal options for such removal, and I am confident we will act expeditiously to  end this matter once and for all.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Outrage on top of outrage (4.00 / 2)
More needs to be said about domestic violence, it needs to be brought out of the shadows.  The perpetrators need to be exposed for the violent criminals they are and the public needs a more complete understanding of what it is and its impact on women, on girls and on all of society.

In addition to the perpetrator of this crime, another state senator has demonstrated his ignorance of domestic violence issues, Sen Ruben Diaz.  NBC News New York reports that Sen Diaz is planning to perform a wedding ceremony for the convict and his victim.  Can he be serious? Sen Diaz wants to put the perpetrator and the victim together again through marriage. Should he not first find assurance that the violence against this victim will not be repeated, an assurance that he cannot get.  Sen Diaz asserts that justice was served, but has it been?  The convict has not been sentenced, is still at liberty, is still a NY State Senator, and has apparently done nothing to address his "problem" with assaulting his girlfriend so severely as to cause bruising and broken skin.

Monseratte must resign his office today. Diaz should resign his tomorrow.

Anyone who protects Monserrate... (4.00 / 1)
...proves that they are also not fit for office and they should either resign or be removed by the voters in 2010...

We will not forget.

We've got some work ahead of us.

I just can't find the words.  Diaz's has issued a statement which is beyond words awful.

Violence against Women is Unacceptable (0.00 / 0)
anywhere, anytime by anyone. But particularly by an elected official.

Monsterrate must go.

Perfect time for bipartisanship (0.00 / 0)
There's no reason for anyone in the State Senate to stand up for an abuser.  We can't tolerate someone who lacks basic respect for human dignity as an elected official.  Everyone in the Senate has a duty to stand up for what's right and expel Hiram Monserrate from the conference.

Senator Brian Foley stands with us as well (0.00 / 0)
Statement from Senator Foley:

"If Sen. Monserrate chooses not to resign, I will use my position as Senator to introduce a measure for his expulsion/impeachment from the Senate," Foley said.

"I will do so, without regard to party affiliation, because of the conduct Sen. Monserrate has exhibited. And I will do so to send a clear message to every individual in New York State: Violence against women will not be acceptable regardless of your position in society."

"For the sake of the New York State Senate, I sincerely hope Sen. Monserrate will heed my call and resign immediately. The consequence of his refusal to do so will be a forced expulsion from the Senate."

Senator Aubertine stands with us too (0.00 / 0)
Statement from Senator Aubertine

"The court has made its decision to convict Hiram Monserrate of assault and domestic violence, and I believe he should resign immediately. If he chooses not to resign, the Senate must take appropriate action immediately.

"Everyone deserves their day in court and the court found Hiram Monserrate guilty. Domestic violence cannot be tolerated, especially by a body of government charged with making fair and equitable laws for all. For the good of New York State and the Senate, he should step down."

All decent New Yorkers should too (0.00 / 0)

This is an opportunity (4.00 / 1)
for the Senate Dems to stand up for what is right and for all New Yorkers to demand that they do so. To let this pass is to condone domestic violence.  Let this be the splash of ice cold water on the face that wakes up the NYS Senate to at least some base level of decency.
