It's in Eric's Hands....and Four Female Democratic Senators

by: NYBri

"Violence against women will not be tolerated in the New York State Senate..." said Senator John Sampson in his presser this afternoon announcing the formation of a committee to look into the "Monserrate Matter."

Eric Schneiderman will chair and, in a nod as to where this may be going, the other four Democratic members of the committee will be women; Sens. Ruth Hassell-Thompson, Diane Savino, Toby Stavisky and Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Interesting choice here in that two of those four are women of color which would also blunt earlier charges of racism leveled by Senator Diaz in his statement of support of Monserrate.

We await the Republican's appointments to the committee. It will be interesting to see if women are represented there as well.

More later, but we need to continue to push the Senate so that they do the right thing and remove Monserrate from office.

The committee needs to move quickly and not let the old way of doing business in Albany stretch this out until the matter is buried.

It will be interesting to see who the Republicans (0.00 / 0)
pick for the committee.

Senator Diaz's earlier claims are the worst sort of race baiting. This has nothing to do with race and his atempt to use race as a shield for a criminal demeans him and weakens the discussion on race in the far too many cases when it is an appropriate part of the discussion.

Translation: Monserrate is rightously screwed. (0.00 / 0)
And it couldn't happen to a better guy.

Smells like a kangaroo court to me... (0.00 / 1)
Funny, I have been around Albany for decades.  During that time, I have heard and read about countless instances of where male legislators have abused women both inside and outside of government.  Looks like there are a bunch of "holier than you folks" people sitting in those plush Senate seats now...with very short memories.

No matter, people will still vote according to who has been screwing the public the most rather than their staff or the female groupies that consort with them in the capital district's local gin mills..

We will not be fooled.

Republican women (0.00 / 0)
There are currently only two Republican women in the state Senate -- Betty Little and Catharine Young.  Since both represent upstate districts, and since all the Democrats on the committee are from downstate (Stewart-Cousins' district in Westchester County being the northernmost), Skelos would be wise to put at least one, if not both, of the women in his caucus on the committee.
