Assemblyman Jose Peralta to Challenge Criminal Monseratte

by: Roatti

Wed Oct 28, 2009 at 18:37:11 PM EDT

Nicholas Confessore of the NY Times is reporting that the Queens Democratic Party will support a challenger to convicted criminal Monseratte next year by backing Assemblyman Jose Peralta:
With statewide elections a year away, the Queens Democratic Party will take the unusual step on Thursday of announcing its support for a primary challenger to embattled State Senator Hiram Monserrate, who was convicted of a misdemeanor assault charge two weeks ago.

José R. Peralta, 37, an assemblyman from Jackson Heights who is considered one of the party's rising stars, said he would announce his decision to run for the seat whether or not Mr. Monserrate, a fellow Democrat, resigned or was expelled. And Mr. Peralta will enjoy the backing of the Queens Democratic Party, whose leader, Representative Joseph Crowley, said he would unveil his endorsement during the party's pre-election dinner.

Apparently this is necessary because the Criminal is rebuffing all calls to resign.  Even though I don't know much about him, I'm inclined to support Peralta against Monseratte unless a better challenger emerges.

This is EXCELLENT news. (4.00 / 3)
It restores my faith in the Queens Democratic party.

Now how about finding a challenger to Espada?

Well, Espada would be the *Bronx* Democratic Party.... (4.00 / 2)
So while my faith in the Queens Democratic Party is restored, not so much the Bronx Democratic Party.  Yet.

Good luck on that one (4.00 / 1)

My favorite part of the article (4.00 / 2)
was the line about this being a rare occurrence.  Rare...as in last year with some guy named Monserrate.

This is very interesting (4.00 / 1)
Peralta won his Assembly seast against Hiram's Chief of Staff, who recently won the special election for Hiram's City Council seat.

After Peralta won, they were all BFFs. I guess you'd want them working together. Politics is funny that way.

What does Peralta have to gain from this? He doesn't really have any competition for his seat. I wonder what Congressman Crowley and the QDP are offering Peralta.

Maybe the QDP will support Peralta's Chief of Staff to replace him in the Assembly or perhaps Peralta sees the Senate as a stepping stone to eventually replace Crowley.

Still, I'll be glad when Monseratte is out so he can't steal from the community anymore.
