NY-23: Pataki Goes Rogue, Endorses Hoffman

by: phillip anderson

Fri Oct 30, 2009 at 01:27:59 AM EDT

I can't say I saw this one coming. It seems that George Pataki has decided to embrace the wingnuts and make common cause with the likes of Sarah Palin, Jim DeMint, Michelle Bachman, Pat Buchanan, Michelle Malkin and Rick Perry by endorsing Con candidate and teabagger darling Doug Hoffman.

As someone personally engaged in the way of life in the Adirondacks and Northern New York, I'm deeply concerned about the course of our nation and the outcome of the election in the 23rd Congressional District.

Simply put, we cannot afford to give another vote to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid we cannot afford another vote for higher taxes, we cannot afford another vote for government run health care and we absolutely cannot afford another vote to take away from hard working men and women the right to secret ballot.

That is why tonight, I'm proud to endorse Doug Hoffman, a Republican, running on the Conservative line for Congress in the 23rd Congressional District.

So, Pataki is making nice with the teabagging fringe by endorsing their flavor of the month. Here's what I want to know: why? To what end? Why is one of the last moderate Republicans, a man with next to nothing in common with the Malkin wing of the GOP, jumping into this race on their side?

Hmmmmm.

Pataki's full statement is on the flip.

Statement from Governor George E. Pataki

Doug Hoffman will stand up to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. He will fight for all the residents of northern New York. He will fight for our proud servicemen and women at Fort Drum, our dairy farmers in Lowville and our manufacturers in Plattsburgh.

As a businessman, and as a life-long resident of the North Country Doug Hoffman understands the need to lower taxes on working families, the need to stand tall against terror and he won't back phony stimulus programs that fail to create the jobs we need and leaves a mountain of debt to our children.

When elected to Congress Doug will work to reduce our taxes, he will stand tall against those who despise our freedoms and he will be a vigilant stalwart against those who would substitute government programs for individual initiative.

   And Doug Hoffman can win.

I urge all the voters of the 23rd Congressional District - Republican Democrat, Independent and Conservative to come out and vote for Doug Hoffman for Congress.

Dammit. (4.00 / 1)
You managed to hit "post" before I did. Deleting...

All R's are moving to the extreme right (0.00 / 0)
Rudy Guiliani moved way to the right when he started running for president.  John McCain went way over there after he was nominated.  It should come as no surprise that George Pataki would shift to the wing-nut end as well; he still has ambitions to return to elective politics, and that's where the Republican party is located.

Elective ambitions (0.00 / 0)
If Pataki does have further "ambitions to return to elective politics," it seems to me that this move would indicate those ambitions do not include statewide office in New York.  I think this is a sign he has no interest in running against Gillibrand.  People have been saying that anyway, but he has made a point not to rule it out.  I think this is a pretty good indication he's just using the speculation to drum up business.

He just abandoned his base... (0.00 / 0)
...In favor of a group of wingnuts who don't trust him and never will. Also known as the McCain Maneuver.

Pataki is from the Scozzafava wing (0.00 / 0)
er... um... cubicle... of the Republican Party. So, yes, why?

I conclude that he has decided to run for Senate and is reading which way the wind is blowing in what remains of his party.

If that's his plan (0.00 / 0)
I can't agree with you on that, Andrew.  If that's his plan, he's doomed himself before he's declared.  You can't win statewide in NY with just the teabagger wing.  I think he's just trying to raise his price on the conservative appearance circuit.  When will he get it that the rest of the Republican party just isn't that into him?

[ Parent ]
Pataki can't think two steps ahead (0.00 / 0)
It's straining Pataki's capability enough to believe that he has figured out he can't even get the nomination without a hard right turn, and he can't win if he isn't the nominee.

Having said that, I think it's more likely that he's positioning himself for a shot at VP in 2012 (Huckabee/Pataki?).  To get that, he probably needs to be as far right-wing as possible.  Don't be surprised if he starts talking about the death penalty sometime next year.

Let them all go rogue. (0.00 / 0)
Most of them already have. I'm personally very comfortable with the Rs doing a full Goldwater and setting up their base camp on the fringe, with the birthers leading the way. The Patakis and Liebermans of the world are the figleaf that makes them appear to the voters as something other than demented lunatics. They can't even decide whether the President is Hitler or Stalin, for crying out loud.

Meanwhile, we can fix the economy, get some kind of healthcare reform out of the Congress, and generally act like responsible adults. Call me hopelessly optimistic, but we have the better product, imperfect, but still better.
