NY-23: NRCC pulling out?

Republican Dede Scozzafava has suspended her bid in next Tuesday's NY 23 special election, a huge development that dramatically shakes up the race. She did not endorse either of her two opponents -- Conservative party candidate Doug Hoffman or Democrat Bill Owens.

I have a hard time believing this helps Hoffman much. Presumably, he already has the fire breathing true believers. Owens had the Democrats and "sick of Republicans". Scozzafava had the true Republican loyalists.

They'll split now-- some who can't stomach voting D at all will vote for Hoffman. Some will stay home, claiming a refusal to participate in a lesser of two evils strategy. But the rest have already rejected Hoffman by continuing to support Scozzafava and I would guess will choose Owens as an alternative that is better than voting for a far-right conservative.
