Want a better Senate?

We all read this blog because we care about our state's government.  We waited for Democrats to take back Albany and then, when they did, everything seemed to go to pot.  We're mad as hell, and we claim we're not going to take it anymore.

The key word there is "claim."  There's a great deal of hullabaloo about not just challenging Republicans, but taking on "bad Democrats."  I'm all for this.  Hell, I can't wait for challengers to emerge--but that's the thing.  We're a year out, and we, as the concerned citizens who only want to fix our state government, continue to spin our wheels.  Perhaps I'm over-eager, but I feel that if serious primary challenges are going to happen to senators such as Diaz, Kruger, Espada, etc... (and tomorrow's vote should give us some further indication) we need to start looking for candidates now.

The New York Democratic Party remains an institution dominated by an entrenched (yet often ineffective) machine.  If we want to grab the reins and right this ship, like national Democrats did over the past four years, we had better start planning in the very near future.  Running a campaign is no easy business, and it's even harder to mount a primary challenge.  This shouldn't be a pie in the sky hope: progressive representation is something that we New Yorkers deserve.

We, as a community of conscientious, liberal New Yorkers need to come together and develop a uniform list of good, progressive primary challengers. If you live in a district that is often said to be in need of a primary shake-up, find somebody who you think would do your district justice and let us all know.  Even if we don't live in your district, we will care and give support to any deserving candidate.  No matter where you live, I think we can all realize that the road to a better State Senate doesn't just run through our own districts.  It runs from Buffalo to Brooklyn, from Syracuse to Staten Island, from Rochester to Westchester.

Our time is now.  Our job begins today.  Who will help us take control of our state?

for a more effective and progressive state government?

No you guys should talk here (0.00 / 0)

Absolutely right (4.00 / 2)
It starts now.

There are several things that can be started today with or without a candidate.

1. Form a local grassroots group
2. Meet regularly
3. Learn how to participate in the petitioning process that gets candidates on the ballot
4. Discuss potential candidates
5. Invite them into your group or to come and meet with your group

If you've got a candidate... Great!

But even if you don't... starting organizing now. It can be done in YOUR living room over coffee and cookies.

Thank you. (0.00 / 0)
I logged on to this site, after having not spent much time since the last election.

And you've confirmed that despite the despicable behavior of these buffoon there are no challengers on the horizon? Let's start identifying possible candidates.

office (0.00 / 0)
I'd love to run for office as a 20 year old gay man, but I doubt the Democratic party would take me any serious, nor would the people

Perhaps we should create our own party to rust these oiled machines

Depends where you live? (0.00 / 0)
If you live in a district that's in need of a good waking up, why not go for it?  If you believe that you offer a better alternative to the current representation, get in touch with your local Democratic clubs or other grassroots organizations and try to stir up some interest.  This will, hopefully, lead to the kind of populism we need in the Democratic Party--rather than continuing the cycle of defaulting to corrupt, wrongheaded incumbents year after year.

And I don't think forming a third party would be the best idea at this point in time.  Fixing the NY Democratic Party will lead to much more overall progress than splintering off and splitting votes.  We unfortunately just don't live in a society where third parties get much, if any, traction.

I'm in NY50

De Francisco needs to go... but has too much clout for a college student to overtake

I've tried to get in touch, but problem is trying to get to meetings when you go to school in Buffalo, a little difficult! I know some people, but not nearly enough to get me as a primary candidate

Well, 20's the age to get involved (0.00 / 0)
you don't have to headline the ticket, but volunteering, helping out, organizing is step one to seeing how the game works and making the appropriate connections and friends, currying favors.

Carl Kruger (4.00 / 1)
The Dean of the Gang of 3 has to go.  The only thing he's good at is clogging our mailboxes with his self promotional mailings.  He led the insurgency in June and put a gun to Malcom's head to become Chairman of the Finance Committee.  He calls himself a "Progressive Dem" but how come he was the ONLY Dem ever given a Chairmanship by Bruno?  Several of us would like to find a replacement for him.

Lilliam Perez (4.00 / 1)
The article linked to by the current top frontpage diary sounds promising (http://newyorktorch.jrn.columbia.edu/?p=1100).  Ms. Perez seems like an ideal candidate: progressive credentials, but enough institutional support to register as significantly more than a gadfly.  She's the kind of candidate, it appears, whom we should be more actively seeking out.  Let's hope she runs and that others like her choose to do the same.
